Pros: the rooms are clean and well decorated, and ours had a great view of the mountains. The price was very competitive (about 2/3 to 1/2 that) of other hotels we looked at in the area. The hotel staff was very polite and responsive to e-mail.
Cons: the hotel is a walk over the bridge from the city center, and if you are looking to spend a lot of time in historic (guidebook) Freiburg, it feels a bit far from the action. However, the biggest con is the noise at night and the lack of 24 hour reception. On our third night at the hotel, a bunch of people were yelling back and forth, knocking on each others doors repeatedly and congregating in the hallway (just outside our door) through the early hours of the morning. We actually wound up changing hotels as a result of this experience, as in other hotels the guests don't have to try and control other, slightly out of control guests.
Bottom line: I think the Hotel Schemmer is great if you are a student, do keep late hours, or are looking for something that is a hybrid between a hostel and a hotel (you can get rooms with their own bathroom for a reasonable rate). But, if you are looking for a romantic, noise-controlled place to stay, or want to feel close to the city center you may want to pay a little more to stay somewhere else.
