Stayed there for 2 days in Freiburg and mainly picked the hotel due to the proximity of the people we were visiting.
The Kaiser Freiburg is basically a restaurant with 15 rooms attached to it, whereby some rooms don´t have showers. We paid 90 EUR / night for a double room , which I consider a fair price. It is located within a wealthy residential area of Freiburg and it takes around 10 minutes to walk to the pedestrian zone.
Every room has its own décor and style, so it may be worthwhile to check in the internet pictures. Especially the suite is very spacious and definitely a great value proposition.
Ownership/Management changed only recently in 2010 and is now run by a group of dynamic youngsters that have completely turned around this place. This group also renamed the place from “Deutscher Kaiser” to “Kaiser” in order to get rid of the nationalistic touch of the former owners. However, there is still a picture of the German Emperor Wilhelm II in the dining section, which I recommended them to put down, because of his negative role during WWI.
We did not have a full lunch/dinner at the restaurant but we realized that the restaurant was fully booked all nights and the dishes smelled and looked very tasty. We only tried their vines and cakes, both really excellent.
