“Charming Old Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2014

We stayed one night in this lovely hotel, having booked very last minute, we got a great deal on suite 21. An old fashioned hotel in almost every way, wonderful service from a glass of sparkling wine on arrival. Our suite was very large, with two big windows looking out onto the main street outside, and a massive round shower than you could have a party in, loved it! It was quite a 60's design, but extremely clean and well kept. It had a lovely homely feel about the whole hotel, and the staff could not have been more helpful, giving us a great restaurant recommendation for the Sunday night.

Perfectly located in the old town, easy walking distance from all the local attractions, five minutes from the Munsterplatz, if that. We would stay there again in a heartbeat...but if you're looking for modern minimalism, this is not the place for you.

Room Tip: Suite 21 was massive, but faced the street if that matters. Double glazed though, so no problem with...

I stayed at Hotel Baeren in may 2014 for three nights and loved every moment, the room had a 1980's feel but i really liked that,it was very clean and bright there was a balcony overlooking a garden which was nice, the room was big,the bathroom was perfect, lots of space, breakfast was fine nothing special, staff were very nice, especially Sebastian at reception, the location is perfect,i really liked staying here and hope to return soon

Room Tip: Like all hotels rooms vary,so ask staff about the different type of room before choosing

We stayed at Zum Roten Baeren in November a couple of years ago. We had visited Freiburg several times before, and this time we had choosen to live in the very central part of the old city in the company of friends. On our way from the airport hotel staf rang to tell us that there was a problem with our booking. Sadly they had no room for us, but offered a room in a guesthouse some kilometers outside of town. This did not at all please us, as we had been planning for a city visit with the comfort of coming and going back and forth to and from the hotel to various activities in town. The staff then offered us to arrange a nice room for us in the hotel sauna. We could then move to another room the next night, and finally end up in a top floor suit for our last night. Seeing no other way, we choose the sauna. The beds were all right, but it was a SAUNA. We had a "rainforest shower", icecold - planed for cooling down after the hot bath, a minimal basin, ment to wash hands in after a visit to the toilett. Hangers for clothes and towels, ment for sauna guests, but no closets, no bedside lightning, the piquant smell of milddew from?????? etc, etc. The next day we were moved to a top floor room with a balcony. Just beautiful and perfectly nice. BUT we were charged for the sauna night and did not get any information about how often we would be expected to change rooms beforehand. All our Freiburg acquantances were appalled about our experience. Everyone thought that we should have been very well compensated for our inconveniences, which in all aspect related to the hotels inadequacy to deal with bookings. The Hotel Zum Roter Baeren was all together very nice, old fashioned and charming, but I don't think we will go back and risk another night in the sauna.

Room Tip: Be ware of the sauna!

I am currently staying in this hotel which looks very nice from the outside. The inside is worn and in my room quite outdated. Room is big but the carpets have multiple stains and the tiles in the bathroom are outdated - everything functioned as expected, hot water, TV etc. However, I choose this hotel for the location and the WiFi. In my room there is absolutely no connection to the WiFi and my complaints did not help as the hotel was full. So, all I got was an excuse. I would not choose the hotel for my next stay in Freiburg.

Let's start with very small unattractive room, bedding poor and a pillow that would not qualify as such, top it off with no internet! Very bad start to our stay. So we politely reported our concerns and we were offered a new room in 30 minutes. The new room, much larger and the bath, you can actually turn around in. Breakfast just ok, not a lot of assortment as compared to our stay in Nuremberg.

I felt directly at home in zum Roten Baren. Staff is wonderful, without exception. They treated me with real personal attention in a perfectly natural manner.
The hotel is dated. Corridors etc in the hotel look like they were refurbished for the last time in the 1980s. The interior of the room where I slept, on the third floor at the back of the hotel, was also dated but the bathroom looked new. My room was very quiet but was quite warm, also in the night. No airconditioning. When I would leave the glass door open to the little balcony, that however would let the noise in from the room nextdoor, which has a door to the same balcony.
Internet services are also dated. They only work as far as I could find out, on the ground and first floor.
The bed was very comfortable and exactly right. Breakfast was luxurious with many types of bread, meat and cheese as well as cereals, yoghurts and fruits. The only small thing I missed was the freshly squeezed orange juice.
Location is top, in the old town.

We were here with a big family group. The hotel is really ideally situated in the very nice old town of Freiburg and you can walk easily to everything in town. However, there are many, many setbacks: They only have like six parking spaces, so mostly you have to go to a public parking. Although we were promised a discount fo a booking of six rooms, they later said that they could not go down even a little. The price at EUR 158 for a double room is just way too high! The whole hotel urgently needs renovation! The rooms are straight from the 80s, very, very small and very drab. Breakfast is quite nice but you often have to ask the staff to refill things. Overall this is certainly not a four star hotel to any standard.
