Zum roten Bären is an historic hotel which has had an excellent reputation for the 40 plus years that I have lived or later often visited Freiburg. Our latest stay was quite disappointing. On the day of our arrival, there was no hot water anywhere in the hotel, including the kitchen. Three hours later, a mechanic had come and adjusted a valve. Everyone had water then, except our and the neighboring room. That take another two hours. After a day's travel, we had cold showers in the meantime. -- At the same time, two members of the wait staff covered both the reception and the drink, coffee, afternoon cake orders of people in the outside sitting area. The next day a single waiter covered both the reception (checking guess in and out) while also doing the bar tending till 6 p.m. -- In the reception area, as well as on he stairs, the carpeting is frayed. -- Renovation, on a grand scale, seems scheduled for sometime in the fall. Until that time, management doesn't seem willing to invest additional resources (especially an adequate staff). At the moment, then, the hotel is trading on past glory.

My wife works daily on her computer and relies on reliable wifi. We arrived at this hotel charmed by many reviews, but found that my wife could not access the net. The (utterly internet-incompetent) elderly gentleman on duty gave her several codes, none of which worked. She then realized she would be able to go online using the hotel's business code, which of course he neither had nor could give out, nor did he have a superior whom he could call for help.
Utterly unsatisfactory that a hotel in 2018 has no one on duty or on call who can fix a simple wifi problem, but only suggests that "the system might be overloaded." Right, on a Sunday evening.
Very, very disappointing, but sadly not unusual in Germany.

Room Tip: don't expect to have internet

The hotel is classical, clean, comfortable and friendly. The bear comcept is everywhere: carpet, towels, door handles, key chain, sculptures and there are even butter bears! However, all the bears do not spoil but support the ambiente, which in addition is full of treasures: a grand piano, paintings, old sketches, a Singer sewing machine, a wooden rocking horse and many more.
The breakfast was great as well - simply a place to return to.

Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Room was a good size, if a little old fashioned but perfectly adequate for a short stay. The breakfast was pretty standard fare but perfectly O.K.. The old cellar is worth viewing as it really shows the age of the building (you can also book a wine-tasting but unfortunately, we didn't have the time to arrange this). On leaving we were given a beautiful momento of our visit, a book containing images of Freiburg.

It is located in the heart of the city and just a few minutes walk to the Freiburg Munstermarkt. The hotel was over 100 years old so it was definitely old-fashioned. The room wifi system was a bit complicated and should ask for clear instruction from reception. The furniture inside the room was a bit old but good that their toilet seemed to be newly renovated not so long ago. With its history, there was a special cellar in the basement of this hotel. Do borrow a key from reception to pay a visit. Overall, not a bad experience!
