The hotel is located in the pedestrian precinct and is a little difficult to locate. The staff were very friendly, room was clean with basic modern decor. The triple room had adequate space but a little more would have been comfortable.
This is a lovely hotel except we had the worst night of our holiday due to the bells every half hour, the late night revelers who worked their way up the mall and then back, then the delivery trucks and garbage trucks once morning arrived. Normally we can accept these things individually but all of them, with the window open due to the heat was too much for us.

Very nice hotel in a great position. Clean and spacious rooms even though a bit noisy (there a bell ringing every hour in front of the hotel).
Breakfast is yummy with many nice kind of cheese and classical things.
Service was sometimes a bit rude with us: for example when I asked for croissant in the morning they were answering: not for the moment. Bah?!
Wifi was not working well and sometimes they were complaining if we were using PC at the reception too long.
But, overall, it is a nice hotel in a great position!

This hotel in Freiburg im Breisgau (in the Black Forest) offers a buffet breakfast, free Wi-Fi and a DVD/CD player in every room. It is located beside Freiburg Town Hall and pedestrian zone, a 2-minute walk from Freiburg Minster. The best position you can have for seeing the Christmas Market.

The non-smoking rooms at the Hotel am Rathaus provides a TV, minibar and collection of CDs, DVDs and books. They face either the pedestrian zone or the back courtyard.

Free tea and coffee are available during the day in the hotel's lounge. Many restaurants, cafés, bars and shops can be reached on foot from the Rathaus. Unfortunately German hotels don't offer tea & coffee making facilities in the bedrooms.

Freiburg (Breisgau) Central Station is about 11 minutes away by foot. The 35-metre-high The Aussichtsturm Schlossberg Observation Tower is about 4 km away.

A private car park is on site. Guests are allowed to drive across the pedestrian zone to access the hotel.

I stayed 2 nights in this hotel late June 2012.

I really liked this hotel.

The hotel is conveniently located in the Freiburg Altstadt. It's 10 - 15 minutes walk from the railway station. Access to the hotel is from inside a shopping galleria, but the hotel is clearly marked with a sign in the street.

The staff, and management, are friendly, organized and efficient, and gives a personal feeling to the hotel. You get the feeling of a privately owned independent hotel run by someone that likes the busines, and enjoys doing a good job.

I had a single room, that really was a single room, not a single occupancy double room.
As that, it felt adequately spacious and was light and airy. Modern standard hotel decoration with hardwood floors, maybe a little sterile, but functional.
The room had everything, a desk, enough shelfs and hangers, hooks on the wall to hang things on. Several spare power sockets, placed so that you could charge for example your mobile phone, yet reach it from the bed, or from the desk. Light switches placed where they were needed.

There was also a bookshelf with a selection of, german language, books, and a Freiburg mini guide (also in English).

The room had both an internet socket, and a WLAN that was working excellently.

In fact, they seemeed to have thought of everything you might need, down to the details.

The room had an unusual layout, with the bed placed along the wall, and the desk placed at the head of the bed, which worked very well.

Even more unusual, the shower cabin, and basin were placed inside the actual room. This functioned well, and posisbly made the room feel more spacious, than if there had been walls around them, but it felt a little bit weird.

The buffet breakfast had a large selection of bread, meats, cheeses, sausages, etc, as well as eggs, musli, fruit
and fruit salad.

In the Altstadt there are several churches with bells that chime throughout the night. But, apart from the church bells, that did not bother me, it was quiet during the night.

But, the room got rather too warm during the night. I think this would be the case in any hotel in Germany, during the summer.

Room Tip: Possibly some room are less warm than others. It could make sense checking this out.

Very nice hotel, spacious, clean, modern triple room, excellent location (very close to cathedral). Very good breakfast. Parking: a garage just around the corner.

clean, yes. decent bed, yes. decent breakfast, well, acceptable. friendly, yes.

character, no.

the location is, as the name implies, excellent and very central. they had no free rooms and had put me in a single instead of the double i had reserved (for single occupancy), so the room was smaller than i wanted and under the roof, i.e., with slanted ceilings, so it felt a bit tight. but they also reduced the price accordingly.

would i stay here again? sure, if the price is right and it's a brief visit. the problem is, freiburg simply doesn't have any outstanding hotels. when i knew i had to go there for one night, i tried to find a superior hotel, and there just aren't any there, at least not in the center of town.

so i guess it's more a freiburg thing than anything to do with this hotel. again, it's perfectly fine, just not the kind of place where i like to stay. i don't like to spend a ton of time in hotel rooms, but i also don't like a hotel where i feel like the only thing i want to do is sleep and get out. i like to get to my hotel room and have it be so nice that i just collapse into an easy chair and say, 'ah, this is nice...'

The entrance was a bit difficult to find as it is in a shopping mall corridor. The hotel is very clean, convenient to everything, and has great beds. Staff is friendly, European style breakfast was very good. Screens would be a nice addition. Church bells go off 24x7, so if you are a light sleeper this is probably not the place for you. A/C could help muffle the church bells throughout the night. If I return to Freiburg I would stay here again. Room #5.
