We stayed for 1 night and enjoyed our stay immensely. Service was great and friendly. Rooms were clean, and were surprised to see amenities like bathrobes and slippers. Beds were comfortable. Breakfast buffet was very good.

Excellent central location, hard to find better. We asked for a room with view onto the Münster (cathedral), and woke up seeing the splendid gothic architecture through all our windows, as well as the market, which starts to be installed from about 7:00 AM onwards. Leave the curtains open, nobody can look in.
Enjoyed the cathedral bells ringing on the hour -- they did not wake us up, but this no doubt depends on each person. Market noise was no problem, since we were waking up at that time anyway.
Polite and thoughtful personnel, good and reasonable prices in the restaurant. This is a 4-star hotel, so the room prices are higher than most of those in the surrounding area.
You need to have courage to drive through the pedestrian zone (which is allowed, for guests) to unload in front of hotel.
There is limited hotel parking around the block -- the personnel will explain how. Enter the hotel with your luggage via the restaurant, which has a small reservations booth (this no doubt cuts staff costs) -- a bit unusual, but it's not intimidating -- or go down the adjacent tiny alley and enter via a side door. The receptionist helped carry our luggage to our room, which was spacious and very clean.

The room and furniture are a bit old-fashioned, but this is the nature of the hotel. As hotelliers ourselves, we would stay again, and strongly recomment Oberkirch for its location, service, private parking and overall facilities.

Room Tip: Suggest you ask for a room with view onto the cathedral, if possible. Note: there are two buildings...

The hotel Oberkirch shares one of Freiburg's most ideal locations and is situated just adjacent to the city's impressive cathedral. The Oberkirch's restaurant and Inn rooms face onto this square. It is centrally located in the charming old town which is dedicated to pedestrians only so a quiet, pleasant haven just a stones throw to everything.

Every morning there is a fresh fruit/vegetable/flower and smoked meat/sausage market. On Saturday's the market is in full bloom with many more vendors. Opens early between 0700/ 0800 and closes early afternoon.

The hotel itself has two faces with very different room ambiances and choices: the newer, larger annex on a smaller side street (with no church views) and the older traditional German type Inn rooms directly facing the cathdral and lovely square.

Room choice all depends on one's tastes. Having stayed in both, the annex is more to our personal tastes especially double rooms with bathtubs, corner locadtions, with windows on two sides. Rooms are just large enough to be cozy but with plenty of elbow space. They are well and comfortably furnished with soft, fluffy duvets and extremely comfortable beds.

Other rooms in the annex appear a tad bit austere, especially the singles. In the older Inn section, rooms are indeed traditional, spacious and with old world German charm. There is a hint of sparseness (athough with distinct attention to quality and taste) in some of these rooms, which is consistent with the age and era that is being preserved. WIndows face the cathedral and morning market.

Service here is consistently impeccable, friendly, efficient, helpful. Fresh fruit is always available at the front desk, just that small welcome addition.

Breakfasts are lovely and taken in the restaurant. Excellent espresso, a lovely cross section of selections.

Room Tip: There are choices of good food, fair prices with menu's outside the traditional. Finding howeve...

Our room was spacious, clean and overlooked the Cathedral square. The reception staff was helpful and courteous. The best thing about this hotel for us was the central location. We were a short walk from restaurants, shopping, and the Schlossberg trail.

Really nice hotel! Amazing location (impossible to find a better location)! Lovely, spacious and very clean room. But the best is the restaurant! Great atmosphere and delicious traditionnal food. Service is perfect. We simply LOVED that small, charming hotel. Worth noting that our room was right in front of the cathedral, ...so bells ringing at 7am. I really liked it and really enjoyed hearing bells, but worth knowing.

It is a little hard to do this hotel justice after spending a week in the most perfect hotel imaginable in a lake in Italy but it is only fair to the Hotel Oberkirch to try.

We arrived in Freiburg after almost a whole day's journey by train from Italy. We were a bit confused by the address since the hotel reception appears to be in a side street and not in the Muensterplatz as stated on my printout. We ended up in the cosy-looking restaurant where a helpful lady showed us the way around the back to the main reception.

We were given a room on the first floor around the back of the hotel, so not overlooking the Muensterplatz, which I was glad of as I had already read about the bells and didn't really want to be kept up all night. This didn't really turn out to be too much of a problem in the end, and the free earplugs left on the bedside tables were not needed as although we could hear the bells, they weren't especially dominating.

For the rest of the room, there were some good things, and some bad things.

Good:

The room was clean. We had a plate of fresh fruit and some cute little cookies on the pillows which was a nice touch. We also had a free bottle of water although it was fizzy and neither of us like sparkling water! Still, it was nice that it was there. There was a room safe which is always a plus. The bathroom was lovely and modern, and the shower had nice hot water at a good pressure. Bathrobes were also provided!
Breakfast was included and was more than adequate. I rather enjoyed my boiled egg every morning!

Not so good:

The room was a tiny bit cramped, mostly dominated by the large austrian-style double bed. The pillows were awful and so soft they offered no support at all. The mattress was the complete opposite and I woke up with a slight backache on both days.
The room was a little old-fashioned for my own taste but this was what I expected so not really a problem.
Our room also overlooked a courtyard which also seemed to be the smoking spot so whenever we had the windows open, we'd get a roomful of cigarette smoke.
The shower leaked something chronic - we managed to soak through 3 bathmats by the time we'd both had a shower. Think it had something to do with the inefficient doors.
The wifi didn't work in our room so we had to wander around the hallway until we found a signal. It was free though, so can't complain too much about that!

Overall, the hotel was good for what we needed, a central place to stay with reasonable facilities. We didn't find it amazing, although after staying in a number of other hotels in/around Freiburg during the rest of our stay, it was certainly above par.. And the location in the charming old town is unbeatable.

Hotel Oberkirch is located on the Muensterplatz in the heart of Freiburg's old town. My room was in the hotel's "annex," just a two-minute walk from the main hotel. It was clean, tidy and equipped with a lift. The staff was extremely welcoming and my single room was spacious, tastefully decorated, had a flat screen TV with an English-language news channel and came with a welcoming gift of fruit and a bottle of water. The shower had plenty of hot water and water pressure was good. There was a complimentary travel-size shampoo-and-shower soap along with a small cake of hand soap. The breakfast buffet, included in the price of the room, was more than adequate, with variious kinds of breads, cold cuts, cheeses, fruit juices, joghurts and cereals offered. In addition, the staff offered to cook an egg for you. It was a treat to sit outside in the evening at one of the hotel's tables facing the towering Gothic St. Martin church and sip a glass of wine and people-watch. On the downside, as with many older European hotels, there was no air conditioning, so my room was hot, even with the windows open.
