We chose this hotel based on the tripadvisor reviews and were definitely not disappointed!! Staying in the Black Forest area we were looking for a more traditional place rather than one of the modern hotels that look the same no matter where you go, so this place was exactly what we were after. We travelled with 2 children aged 10 and 17, so we were given the family 'room' in the loft. This family 'room' consisted of 2 large bedrooms, dining table, and a separate little area with a writing desk. The beds were super comfy and we felt at home straight away. the hotel has Wifi but also has a computer in one of the hallways which was there to use free of charge. Huge bonus since we travelled without our laptops. Every morning we enjoyed a wonderful buffet breakfast and when my other daughter (who lives in Freiburg) came to join us the staff didn't even charge her. We found the staff very friendly and helpful whenever we needed anything. The hotel is very central, so we could walk to most places of interest but the hotel also gave us a free transport pass for the area, so we could catch the tram/train whenever we wanted. I have since booked a room for another family member who also wanted to visit my daughter and she had an equally fantastic time (she stayed in a modern double room not located in the main building and liked it because it was bright and very quiet, which is what she asked for) and I am just about to book again....So, needless to say, I love this place and after staying at the Schwarzwaelder Hof and would never choose another hotel whilst in Freiburg

Booked a double room and a single room here for a weekend stay. Both rooms in the annex. Very clean. Nicely renovated. Breakfast was good both mornings. Easy to walk to most places in old town. Munster is about 5 minutes away, etc. Wi-Fi didn't work so well in the rooms, but was just fine in the main building. Would stay here again.

Stayed for 2 nights. Able to walk from the train, but would also be an easy short taxi. Close to the centre of town and to public transport. Hotel provided us with travel cards that got us free transport on the local public system.
Room is very clean and crisp, on the smaller side but it is Europe after all. Lovely restaurant attached to the hotel that served breakfast. Good selection of cold breakfast foods and great coffee. Had dinner in the restaurant also which was lovely. Found it difficult to get a table
at many local restaurants as we were there on the weekend.
Good value for money, would recommend

Great location, friendly staff and good breakfast each morning (cold cuts, hardboiled eggs, breads, fruits, yogurt, etc). Had free Wifi but our room on the third (4th in US) floor didn't get the signal. Clean room with comfortable bed (a little small but only compared to modern hotels, i.e. it's expected for an older building and in no way detracted from our stay).
The included transit card helped us save a few Euros on our day trip to Basel. Train station is maybe a 5-10 minute walk.
Freiburg is a lovely town with plenty to do for our 3 night stay. Christmas market really brought the crowds during the weekend which lent a big(ger) city feel. There is a normal market in the square which had all sorts of food, produce and crafts.

Room Tip: our room on 3rd floor had windows opening to a small street, and the noise never bothered us. If in...

The proprietor and the other folks (his family, I believe) were invariably helpful and courteous. For example, they helped us plan all of the transportation and other details for a complicated day trip. Our room in the annex was new, modern and clean. The breakfasts that came with the room were good, with nice variety and ample quantity..The price (November) was good. The location was convenient--near the cathedral, museum, etc., and a ten minute walk from the train station. The free wireless worked well with our Windows laptop. The reservation process was smooth and reliable. It is an excellent place to stay, and we will stay there again the next time that we are in Freiburg.

Freiburg was the 1st destination of our 1st ever trip to Germany... & it was a lovely introduction to the country. The place you stay at is an important aspect of any destination, & we are VERY GLAD to have chosen Schwarzwaelder Hof.
The booking (done almost 2 months in advance) was smooth, through emails with Mr.Walter Engler, the charming host of this property.
He was always there when we needed any help or advice through the 2 days of our stay.

Location: On a quite street in the old town, not more than a 15-min (comfortable) walk from the main train station, even with luggage.
Close to all the main 'sights' in the town. They gave a free local transport pass for our 2-day stay, very helpful.

Food: The breakfast was lovely, lots of options.
The restaurant is supposed to be quite popular, but was closed during the week (Christmas/ New Years)

Room: Decent-size room, with good heating. Small bathroom, but that seems to be the norm in most European hotels

Didnt try the wi-fi, but there was common PC on the 1st floor, which is good enough for tourists.

Thank you Mr.Walter Engler, would love to meet you again :)

Very sweet place to stay...Walter and his wife were so gracious and helpful with last minute
reservations. Rooms clean, organized and great breakfast. Would go back to again!

Room Tip: Probably better to ask for the quieter rooms, as it is on a busy street.
