“Wonderful blend of old and new in the center of Freiburg”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

We were visiting Freiburg for the Zelt Musik Festival and were so glad we stayed at the Schwarzwaelder Hof Hotel. The hotel is a wonderful blend of old charm, modern amenities and fascinating art. A very good breakfast with a selection of meats, cheeses, breads, yogurt, fruit, juices, and coffee are included. Also included is a public transportation pass for travel in Freiburg and the region - we took the regional train to the Black Forrest. Check in with Walter at reception if you need help with travel plans, or just want to learn more about the history of the art in the hotel, or the history of Freiburg. I'm looking forward to my next visit!

We stayed in a suite which was worth the extra cost, it was well equipped with a very nice bathroom. The room looked onto the street and was reasonably quiet. A very good breakfast with lots of choice of fresh fruit, breads and cakes. The restaurant was excellent with fresh local food and wines, Good value around 50 euros for two.The reception and staff were excellent and spoke good English.Wandering around on a Sunday was very quiet, although the majority of shops were closed there were plenty of eating places open and there are lots of sights to see.Would stay here again

There were many pluses to our stay here. Reaching the hotel by foot from the train station was relatively simple - pretty much a straight line toward the forested berg/burg/bluff with the spire of the Munster off to the left. Reception was friendly and helpful. The room was spotless and featured modern plumbing, lighting and windows. Breakfast in the restaurant was very enjoyable as was a beer there in the evening. The proprietors have adorned the walls with a varied and interesting art collection and the curved stairwell is a work of art in itself. Situated at the 'back' of the town you have access to the forested bluff behind which you can access on foot or by elevator to the restaurant/beer garden. There are miles of trails here if you like. The outdoor biergarten is a classic with views not to be missed down below and across the nearby valleys from a perch over vineyards. There were locals in lederhosen with instruments singing and having a good time while we were there. The munster and augustiner museum (another must-see) are very close as well. Nearby is a ticket centre (not the info centre) which had details on a variety of concerts and we purchased reasonably priced tickets to a performance for orchestra and mixed choir at the university along the tree-lined river beyond the gates of the old town and easily reached by tram as were other areas of interest outside of Freiburg centre. The best plus of staying here was that with our 4 night stay we were given a free transit pass that could be used on buses/trams and intercity trains in the Black Forest. This not only gave us freedom, but also made life simple and saved us several euros. We took the trains as
far as titisee and the pass let us explore the region more extensively than we would have.
Another plus: the sound of the church bells...A negative: the bells in the EARLY morning.
We enjoyed the seasonal creamy white asparagus soup at the restaurant just down the street from the hotel toward the gate. ANother character place, like the hotel's restaurant.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights. We stayed round the corner in the annexe. It was clean, up to date, and everything worked as it should. Only gripe I might have would be the flakey WiFi. Breakfast was also good, nice fresh bread and a good variety of items. All in all a great stay and keep up the good work!

Stayed for a night, and loved the area. Hotel is located in heart of the city. You'll pay extra for parking in the adjoining garage. Rooms are very clean, but basic. Traditional breakfast is included, and I thought it was excellent. Do not miss the attached restaurant too - it's got some really good local food (try the black forest trout)

To be honest we didn't actually get to stay at this hotel as they were booked out when we arrived late on a saturday night. But the staff were so lovely and helpful that I wanted to write a review anyway as I imagine you would receive the excellent level of service if you were to actually stay there. The lady at reception seemed genuinely disappointed she couldnt offer us a room and proceeded to look up all the neighboring hotels in the area and called them for us to check if they had availability. This took a good 20 minutes during which time she also assisted other guests. We got lucky eventually, with a rather pricey suite a few blocks away but she reassured us we would get value for money and it was a lovely hotel. She booked the room for us over the phone and gave us directions on how to find it and even offered us an umbrella as it was pouring with rain and said we could bring it back the following day. I watched as she gave guests a similar level of customer service so she wasn't just sweet talking us! Who knows, maybe she got some sort of kickback for the booking but the hotel she secured us was as lovely as she said and we diidnt have to stay at the Mercure so we were happy - any benefits she might have received would be well earnt in my opinion! We loved Freiburg but only got to stay there for one night. We're hoping to get back there some day and we'll make a point of staying here at this hotel, but we'll be sure to book first (she said its only a small hotel and they do book out on weekends).

We returned to this hotel when visiting our son who was spending his semester in Freiburg, after staying here three years prior. Our room was perfect--- spotlessly clean, comfortable bed and recently renovated. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. We took advantage of the delicious buffet breakfast each morning, which was included in our stay. The location of the hotel is perfect. It is located in a charming part of the city within walking distance of many restaurants and shops. There is a tram stop around the corner and a tram tickets are included with your room-- very convenient. The price was very reasonable.
