“No major complaints, but not great either”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

This is a safe, clean hotel, located within 5-7 min walking distance to old downtown and the train station. The rooms are clean and fairly spacious for a European hotel. There's nothing really nice or luxurious about this hotel, though. The beds are hard, the towels are cheap, the Internet is expensive and unacceptably slow. The staff is friendly, but when we needed something, service was not prompt - the coffee that housekeeping forgot to refill was never delivered to our room. There is a nice bakery half block down the street.

Having read a lot of the other reviews, I was somewhat apprehensive about staying at this hotel. I need not have been.

My partner and I stayed for four nights over the new year. We had a room overlooking the main street on the fourth floor. This hotel is a modern building in contrast to the many historical buildings that are hotels in the old town. There are pros and cons to this. Having stayed in Heidelberg hotels for 20 years, staying in an old hotel building in the old town gives you lots of character and proximity to the old town, but you rarely will have a quiet room due to older, wooden windows and lots of people on the streets until quite late. They rarely are air conditioned too. A newer built hotel won't be as central or have as much character, but will tend to be quieter with double glazed windows and air conditioning. And a short walk to the old town is little to complain about.

Leonardo City Centre falls into the latter group. It is a short walk to the main street and old town, and very easily accessible. It was very comfortable, and the only noise is if you leave a window open. In saying that, it is significantly quieter than staying in the old town. The street it is on is not very busy, particularly for a city centre hotel. You cannot stay in a city centre and expect no street noise.

The room was spotless, very comfortable, warm, slept great on the beds, had a bath with a shower, air conditioning, and was very spacious. It had no old character but didn't expect that. Breakfast was in a lovely traditional style breakfast room. It was a traditional buffet style with meats, cheeses/ cereal etc and some warm items. I would rate the breakfast as excellent for a continental traditional spread. Loved going for breakfast.

Staff were absolutely lovely. Very helpful, very welcoming, and always a smile. Am surprised others thought differently. The hotel was very busy and they never let the experience suffer. Thank you to all staff.

I would give the hotel 4 out of 5 for a few small reasons. WiFi is outrageous in price. No excuse for this, it should be free. There are lots of places to eat and stay in Heidelberg with free WiFi, which is typical of most hotels and restaurants in Europe. So I don't believe it should be charged for, and at such unacceptable rates. Cafe Merlin is close by, serves lovely food and has free WiFi, as has the two Cafe Extrablatt on the main street. I would also have expected a small gym in the hotel.

Overall, I would certainly stay here again. So conveniently located, warm, comfortable, lovely staff, excellent breakfast and competitively priced. It should be rated much higher in my experience of staying in hotels in Heidelberg for over 20 years.

This hotel wasn't overly memorable. The room size was good and after a night on a sleeper train it was a good place to stay while stopping through.

It was clean and comfortable but nothing to be to fussed over. I'd stay again for a stopover but am sure there are nicer places. It was hard to find somewhere to eat as it is not right in the main part of the town.

4 star are the costs for breakfast and WLAN. I have seen many 2-3 star hotels with better room standard and service. The 2 person room should have a 2nd seat. The bathroom could use some re-furnishing or -styling; for sure not 4-star. The bed-pillow is very soft, of course matter of taste. We'd turned of the heating and opened the window to get fresh air and smell in the room. Keep the window closed at night, the traffic noise will wake you up early in the morning. One can find bakeries around for a quick breakfast. The one in the hotel is OK, but it was very busy with bus-groups; personnel was clearly understaffed to keep all clean and filled. Avoid the toilet in the lobby, we had some unpleasant sights here. The elevator in the morning is a crime; not specified for busy times. We preferred to walk after a while. Take the tram and busses to the Altes Hallenbad for 1,10 Euro and you are close to the hotel.Summary: I suspect business is easy in Heidelberg, otherwise this hotel should need to consider some attention or reduce to 3 stars.

located at main traffic artery including street cars, which seem to run all night. All rooms facing the street guarantee you a sleepless night. And keeping the window closed is not an option in october, since the rooms are overheated and cannot be regulated.
Internet WIFi extremely expensive and does not work in rooms further away from the router, which is installed next to the lift.

Staff is disinterested in your issues.
breakfast was okay though

Room Tip: dont go for rooms facing the street, you will regret it

I stayed here for 2 nights in September 2013.
The hotel is in a great location. 10 minutes walking distance from the main Heidelberg train station in one direction and 10 minutes into the old town in the other.
Heidelberg can be reached swiftly and cheaply from Frankfurt airport.
Take the ICE train to Mannheim and then change, cross platforms and get the local train to Heidelberg. Total price EUR24,50.
The hotel is very clean, hospitable and breakfast is plentiful. The internet worked fine.
For SAP employees there is a daily shuttle service that picks you up from the hotel in the morning and brings you back in the evening for EUR8 per one way trip.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor to get a bit of a view.

I stayed at the Leonardo Hotel Heidelberg City Center for 6 nights. The bedroom was both spacious and clean. The staff was helpful and spoke good English. I had to ask them about the trains and other things and I got good answers right away. The breakfast was good and had a lot of vaiety.
