“A beautiful and austere church”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

Heidelberg has many churches, and you can see that by either climbing one of the mountains that surround the old city or by hearing the bells toiling at some points of the day. This one is the one that stands out the most, by being the heart of the old town, but its impressive building, by its beautiful rooftops or by its size right beside most of the toursit attractions in town.

“Lovely church, nice to look at”
Reviewed 16 January 2014

Heiliggeistkirche is worth a peek if you happen to be in Heidelberg to see the old town or the palace or the university, but it is not worth a trip in its own right. It is right on the main Marktplatz, and is very convenient for a quick visit while wandering the streets of Altstadt. The history of the church is interesting, having been partitioned straight down the middle for use by both Catholics and Protestants until rather recently. There was a very pleasant docent in the entryway who regaled my friend and I in German with stories of Heidelberg and pointed out various other attractions that she thought we would enjoy.

“Most famous church in Heidelberg”
Reviewed 23 December 2013

The Church of the Holy Spirit (Ghost) is also called Heiliggeistkirch. We visited Heidelberg for a job interview for my husband last month; the spire from this church immediately drew us in. Our hotel was in Altstadt, Old Town Heidelberg, just a few minutes' walk from this gem of a cathedral. We've seen a handful of old, beautiful churches in Europe, but this one was special, particularly for the organ music being played live to a mostly empty church and for the superb rooftop view of the city. We were grateful it was November and not the height of tourist season; we had the rooftop to ourselves. Entry to the church was free, though it cost $2 USD per person to go up the steep tower stairs to the rooftop. Absolutely worth it! The rooftop views allow panoramic views of Heidelberg, including Heidelberg Castle (Schloss Heidelberg), the Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche), the Neckar River, and the Karl Theodor Bridge.

“A timeline through history”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

I thought the name was "Church of the Holy Spirit", but close enough. You can wander through this old cathedral and climb the steeple, about 200 steps, for a view of the Neckar River and old Heidelberg. The architecture is really great with the large arches and buttressed walls. This, like most things in Heidelberg gets crowded. The stained glass windows are absolutely beautiful and the history of the church's role in the Thirty Years War, Protestant Reformation and WWII are also fascinating. The small gift shop in the church has educational and tasteful gifts, including books.

“A beautiful church on Market Square.”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

My hotel was on Market Square in Heidelberg's Old Town. The rear of this beautiful church could be seen from my window. I took many photos from all sides. At one time, a wall separated the church so that Protestants and Catholics could worship at the same church.
