We visited Alter Simpl for dinner again this year after visiting it a few years ago when in Mannheim. We remembered cozy atmosphere and delicious schnitzel. This was still true after 2 years. Unfortunately, we hadn't made reservations, so we ended up sitting at the bar, directly in front of the bartender, which was a bit awkward, but ended up being fine.
I tried the local Dunkel beer and my wife had a heffeweisen, both of which were excellent. Like most German beer, they were smooth and delicious, and went very well with well cooked meat.
I tried the jagerschnitzel while my wife tried the ziguenerschnitzel. These were just as fantastic as we remembered. Huge cuts of meat smothered in delicious gravy. In my case, with mushrooms, and in hers, peppers and onions.
Service was very good. Very fast and friendly. Our schnitzels did take a while to come out, but I think it was based on how incredibly crowded the place was.
The atmosphere is typical German, with lots of dark wood and a fake yule log on the screen in the corner which I appreciated.
