“VALUE FOR YOUR EUROS”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2014

We stayed for 5 nights Wednesday - Sunday and the staff were always helpful especially as our arrival was 2 hours later than planned, getting in at 00:30. The 5 euro breakfast was very good value and kept us going all day. We were well advised for good local restaurants in the evenings and the location within a few minutes' walk of the station suited us 'eisenbahnfreaks'. The decor is a bid jaded, but it was a great 'bed & breakfast' establishment. We would visit again.

Room Tip: The road outside the hotel is quiet, but there is some traffic noise and there are quieter rooms but...

Our experience of this hotel was not so bad, as it is written in some earlier comments. We stayed in a double-bed non-smoker room, which was quite clean and maintained. Strength of this place is definitely its location - just about 5-10 minutes from the Main Station, and the symbol of the City - Wasserturm. Bad thing are too soft pillows and extremely disastrous wi fi connection. Hotel staff is kind and speak various languages.

But, for the next time, we would consider taking another hotel.

Booked a three bed room and asked for a cot for our youngest child three months in advance for a family trip. When we arrived, we were told there were no more three bed rooms and no cots available. Staff apologised and we were given two double rooms instead, but not the ideal situation. Staff were friendly, but the hotel seemed to be run a bit like Fawlty Towers minus the comedy. Our rooms smelt strongly of many years of accumulated cigarette smoke, were generally run down and the towels were threadbare. I guess you can't expect too much for the price we paid and the breakfast wasn't bad. Unfortunately, though, I cannot recommend this hotel, unless you are really budget concious and there is nowhere else to stay.

Apart from its proximity to the railway station, nothing stands up to justify a recommendation. Everything is average. Staff is friendly.

This hotel is cheap. But I had absolutely no problems. The staff were friendly, the bathroom in my room was very modern, the bedroom was functional, the breakfast was great, I could walk to and from the conference centre and it's a two minute walk from the train station. At this price, I couldn't really ask for more.

We were visiting Mannheim for a family event and booked three rooms in the City Hotel with a low cost approach in mind. My wife booked it and as we needed one room for three people and City Hotel turned out one of the few that had one available, we ended up there. We normally wouldn't stay in a hotel like this and under different circumstances we would have booked the likes of Steigenberger or Maritim. The experience at City Hotel proved that we will absolutely do so in the future. This hotel is very old and is situated in a not so nice neighbourhood. The parking is detached from the hotel so no direct access and very annoyingly you need to take a remote control (of which they have only one) to go in and out. The rooms are small, old, the beds are very uncomfortable, and the towels are as thin as a newspaper. There is no remote control for the tv in the room: I didn't bother to ask for it. In one of the rooms, the heating couldn't be switched off. The shower works with a timer button to save cost I presume but very annoying as you need to push the button all the time. The elevator must be one of the first ever installed in Mannheim: very uncomfortable and don't go in there when you are claustrofobic... Breakfast was OK but simple, but cheap only 5 euros. Staff was friendly and we got a good recommendation for a great German dinner in town. When booking they asked for a credit card guarantee but told us they would not charge the card. I've just found out they did and we have been double-charged so we need to spend time on correcting this again. Annoying. One of the other parties were charged a higher price for the room than the price stated on the reservation and it was quite a huge amount, about 35% higher or so with the argumemt that prices had gone up. They didn't pay this in the end but very strange and not the first time when reading a couple of other reviews. So all in all: pay double for a good hotel in Mannheim instead of City Hotel would be our recommendation.

Although my booking reported the price of the room at € 68 per night, the management has demanded € 80 per night, declaring that the rates have increased from 1 ^ September.
My reservation was made in February and, according to the management, concerned only the availability of the room, not the price, which could be increased.
I had neither the time nor the wish to call the police for € 12!.
Chinese management. Hotel to be avoided.
