Mercure Hotel Stuttgart City Center
Ranked #20 of 146 Hotels in Stuttgart

I chose this hotel during a peak August season. There were several congresses held during that weekend so the only (and acceptable) option was this hotel. It was only for one night and I did not expect much as I knew the standard of Mercure, although the pics were showing nice and modern rooms.

Apart the location which is in the middle of nowhere (just 3 stops on U Bahn) nothing worth mentioning about. Clean basic rooms, and small spartan bathroom.
I slept well but everything looked very dated.
Paid almost 100€ and would not return again.

I booked a "privilege" room with a queen bed and trust me there was nothing that was a privilege about staying in this room - or hotel. The best thing I can say was that the wifi was reliable! You couldn't swing a cat in the room, it was so small. The "queen" bed was two singles with two separate mattress pushed together - and when I insisted on changing rooms (the first smelled of cigarette smoke) I at least got a room with one mattress on a double bed, but now no expresso coffee machine, nor robe or anything else that might have lifted this drab, dark room vaguely in the privilege direction. Having read other reviews I requested a "quiet" room overlooking the gardens and well, garden view it was not, though quiet it was. The hotel seemed much further from the city centre than it looked on google maps and was not only amongst a construction site, it was one itself.....the bar and "restaurant" were trestle tables (with an extremely limited menu) and a makeshift bar area - so take my advice go elsewhere - as having had my second 'bad' recent Mercure experience I for one will surely be voting with my feet and will never stay in this chain again.

I did choose this hotel because it was in walking distance to both places I had business to do. So it was the logic alternative to having to go by car or public transport. Location was prime, but the rest was a little disappointing. The hotel was under construction with plastic sheets on the floor and the room also was due for a make over. Considering the price, the construction in and around the hotel and the rather steep parking fees I would take my chance and take the car or public transpo.

As previous reviewers have said; this hotel is situated half a mile uphill from the main train station or a couple of stops on the Ubahn (station-stadtbibliotek). The station itself is undergoing renovations and there are major building works between the station and the hotel. At this time there is also scaffolding surrounding the hotel itself so be prepared for workman walking to and fro past your bedroom window no matter what floor you are on.
The room we had looked out over the side of the hotel to office windows and the forecourt of a petrol station. The noise, if you could bear to open the windows, was incredible. To the front of the hotel there is a very busy 4 lane road which never stops and also this is the point where the Ubahn goes from surface train to underground so again, lots of noise. I believe the rear of the hotel backs on to a car park so perhaps less noisy.
The room itself is compact but fine as is the shower/toilet. Clean and functional. If I had one piece of advice to give the hotel staff it would be to clean up the lobbies as cleaning carts sat out all day long making the place look more than a little untidy. Considering they were left out all day, we came back after a long day out to find our room untouched.
Our biggest problem was the heating/ac unit which we tried to turn off at night. After one hour of being in bed and no movement in the room, the fan came on at full blast. When we leapt out of bed to turn it off the motion sensor picked up movement and switched the fan off. All very strange as we spent three nights leaping up in the dark to motivate the sensor into switching off the heating every hour. We asked the manager what they could do about this but apparently everyone was powerless to help! So a word of warning: if you don't like sleeping with air con or heating blasting out at you overnight; I would give this hotel a wide berth.
The breakfast was good with a lot of choice but busy on the weekend so either arrive early or a little late to eat. We ate in the restaurant one night and found that to also be adequate.

Room Tip: Back rooms are quieter but beware there are over 40 rooms in the hotel designated as "Smoking&q...
