Compared to the bigger cog railways in the Alps, this is rather small scale. Its easily accessed from a local metro stop, and you can get off for reasonable views of the city from above - but Stuttgart isnt a city whose views will take your breath away.

Using the three day travel ticket for an exhilarating ride way up above Stuttgart with commanding views. It winds its way along the streets and it may be worth while getting off around half way to get some panoramic photos.

You can catch this cog wheel train right outside of the Degerloch U-Bahn and take the 10-15 minute ride to Marienplatz for some awesome views of the city (sit on the right of the train facing forward for the best views). There are several stops along the way to get out and enjoy the views. Bikes are welcome and there is a bike rack on the front of the train. It would be a strenuous walk back up for exercise.

The roughly 15 min train ride starts from Marienplatz station and ends at Stuttgart-Degerloch giving an incredible view of the Stuttgart city and probably one of the few Rack Railways in the world(Nilgiri Rack and Pinion Mountain Railway in south India is the other that I could think of). The more Higher you go, the more expensive is the houses in the neighborhood and the more majestic is the view.
If you happen to have a bike, the train also has a bike rack at the front of the the engine to carry up the hill and enjoy the ride down in your own bike. Also you can get down in the middle of your ride at a place from where you can view the entire city (not able to recollect the name of the station).

Interesting history for this short ride to the terminus. You can get off half-way and look down on the city, impressive. Your VSS ticket covers the ride so I would try it.
