I have been to this restaurant twice in the last year, and it has been wonderful each time. First I was with a group of 8, and the last time I was alone. It is easily accessible by the U-Bahn (the last stop on the line--Plieningen. It's not a "dressy" place, but faded jeans or (God forbid) shorts would definitely be out of place at dinner. BOOK IN ADVANCE. This place is VERY popular locally, and even groups of two were being turned away. The host/hostess generally speaks English, but I recommend first asking them if they speak English (in German). If you've booked ahead, simply give your name when they ask.

The dinning rooms have a rennovated farm house feel. It's pastoral, but chic (in its way). The lighting is great. They have several different beers, but the Kaiser beer on draft (vom fass) is excellent. It's served in earthenware mugs (krug), and the large (grosse) is a half liter (you can buy the mug for 8 Euro).

The menu is fantastic. It features regional specialities like maultasche zuppe (small, hand made ravioli in a VERY savory broth), seasonal vegetables, liver, and, best of all, game. Deer (hirsch) and wild boar (wild schwine) are frequently on the menu. Of course you cand find all the stereotypical German fare, but I recommend a little culinary adventure.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Prosit.

i eat here quite often for lunch, especially when we can sit outside in the warmer months. a bit crowded and not real comfortable on the inside. the maultaschen is excellent. service ranges from excellent to horrible depending on who you get. all in all, i generally like the place, but currently rated as 6th best in stuttgart on tripadvior? i dont think so. better than average, but not great.

Great place to get REAL GERMAN food, and a wonderful atmosphere. Very close to Kelley Barracks, and they speak English.

Garbe is located close to my office, and we usually stop by once a week for dinner. The staff are always very accommodating and the food is top-notch Swabian cuisine. It's difficult to find a seat in their biergarten over the summer due to their tremendous popularity. I would recommend this establishment to anyone visiting Stuttgart.

Reading the title you may be forgiven to question my sanity, but I assure you, dear reader, that this restaurant serves dishes that may be considered traditional plain fare by their name; the preparation being to a very high standard, however.

To explain the single dishes to non-locals would make this review too extensive and Google and Wikipedia make a lovely job of transmitting the theoretical meaning of Maultaschen or Dinnete much better than I ever could. So I will stick to what sets this place apart:
+ Traditional no-nonsense local meals prepared with top quality ingredients by chefs who are very good at what they so.
+ Very attentive and professional service from the host who greeted us at the reception to the waiters who took our orders and brought our food.
+ Very recently renovated building, keeping a traditional atmosphere without drifting into an overbearing potpourri of Black Forrest style antiques.
+ They advertise that they train people for jobs in the hospitality industry and many staff working there seemed relatively young and were getting instructions here and there. It is nice to see that such places giving young people a chance in a "real world" environment.

Further points to consider:
+ There is a beer garden outside (which I can't review because of the February weather).
+ The restaurant/hotel is best reached by car or light rail line U3 and is away form the city centre. There is a car park nearby which is mostly empty on week ends.
+ Prices are reasonable given the high quality and generous portions of the food, but this is not a place to go for a meal on a tight budget.

Bottom Line: absolutely recommended for upscale but informal traditional dining.
