“Nice inexpensive place to stay while in Berchtesgarden”
Reviewed 15 June 2013 via mobile

I found this hotel on trip advisor after looking through many others for the town. I had originally decided this based solely on price but when I arrived I found it a great bang for the buck. The room was sparkling clean with pressed bed sheets and clean towels. The staff was helpful and spoke good English. There is wireless Internet here, it is through tmobile and was just under €5 for 24hrs of access which was pretty good compared to other parts of Europe. The breakfast buffet was great with lots of selction and all fresh. There was no A/C in my room but it wasn't at all unbearable. Also the hotel is literally across the street from the train/bus station which was super convenient. There are an abundance of great resteraunts just a short walk away. Stop by, I'm sure you will enjoy it here.

While in Berchtesgaden for a couples of days, we made via internet reservations at this place. Rooms 54 and 55 had no heating, it was cold the entire time we stayed there. Yet Rooms 56 and 57 were nice and warm. When we complaint about the cold we were told in not so friendly tone that" it is summer time and we do not heat our rooms"
Yet in the morning the roofs on the surrounding homes all were white with frost. Also since we where 8 People and wanted to sit together for breakfast, well it was only possible the first morning. The second morning we could not sit together, a Bus load of People had arrived the night before and they wanted to sit together. Staff was not friendly either, very short and kind of cold. Cannot recomment this place at all.

Room Tip: There are better Hotels in the same area which you also can find on line. We took this place becaus...

We booked through booking.com, based on reviews on that site and here. Price was a big factor and the Gruenberger was one of the lower priced hotels. We wanted somewhere centrally located in Berchtesgaden, with breakfast included and with a balcony if possible. The Gruenberger was everything we wanted and more.
The hotel is very easy to find, visible from the bus/train station and about two minutes from where you get off the bus from Salzburg.
Checking in was very easy, about 4pm, with a helpful, friendly, English-speaking lady. She explained about the tourist tax which had to be paid in cash as part of our bill when we left, and provided us with the local guest card for a returnable deposit of 5 Euros each. This card makes travel on local buses free and we more than made use of it over the next four days.
Our room was large and immaculately clean. We'd specified an extra large double bed and this is what we got-though in typical Alpine fashion it was two single mattresses and duvets on one bed base. We had a balcony with a view of the town over the river, with the mighty Watzmann to the left. The bathroom was a good size for a hotel with a really roomy shower. I loved the shower so much that I wanted to spend hours in there!
Breakfast was served from 8 until 10, though by 10 o'clock some of the elements were running a bit low. However, this isn't a problem if you're there early enough! There was a huge choice of breakfast, cereals, yoghurts, different breads, jams, cakes, cheeses, meats, spreads, good coffee and two sorts of juice. It was also a surprise to see hot bacon, sausage and egg, since you don't often get hot food as part of a continental breakfast. The breakfast waitress was very helpful and friendly too.
The hotel was very well located for the bus station, but also for the town itself. There's a path from the side of the bus station up the hill to the main street in town. It's a steep climb but only takes about 5 minutes, so it didn't matter that all the best places to eat were in town, we were so close.
We didn't use the swimming pool or sauna, but it was nice to know they were available!
The television in the room was modern and worked well, though the channels are all German and Austrian. Since this is Germany, we didn't expect English channels!
Check out was another painless process, with a different receptionist this time. She was friendly and polite and everything was exactly as we expected.
Next time we're in Berchtesgaden we hope to return to this hotel, we had a lovely stay.

Room Tip: It might be an idea to check your room has a balcony if that's what you want. Ours did and it lo...

It's very disappointing that it states the checking-in time is from 14:00 to 20:00. However, when we arrived there around 16:30, no one is there!!! Thus, I had to go back to train station to use public phone to call them. The hotel owner didn't show up, and assigned a drunk guy who don't speak English to help us. Of course, he is not helpful at all, and know nothing about the internet connection. We knew many hotel in Berchtesgaden are willing to land the tourism card to take local free bus. However, Hotel Gruenberger is not willing to land us the card due to we checked out on the second day morning. Even if we promosied we would return it in 5 hours, after a day trip to konigssee, Hotel Gruenberger insisted to rasie its deposite from 5 euros to 10 euros without any reason!! It is the worst hotel I have lived in Europe!!

Arriving at the train and bus station, this hotel is clearly visible on the other side of the river (to the left). The advantage of this is that it is easy to walk to and, unlike most of Berchtesgaden, there is no uphill stretch to consider when bagcarrying. It also makes it handy if you are considering catching local buses to places such as Königssee.

We arrived at the hotel early and were able to leave our bags until we could check in later. On coming back to check in, despite having ordered one room to be a twin (and it was on the hotel documentation, the receptionist read it in front of us), we had been allocated two doubles. We were given the choice of a double or a twin which the receptionist described as "not our best room". In fact, for one night, it was fine, however, I was a little disappointed that, having made a specific request, it had not been picked up. If we had stuck to the double room (and, as per most hotels in Germany, a double bed is two singles joined up), we would have got a balcony.

Room was very warm, beds very comfortable. TV does not have English channels. Bathroom is adequate and clean. The swimming pool area and sauna is not big, however, it is sufficient. Towels did not seem to be specifically provided for the swimming pool area, requiring that the room towels are used (and either dried or replaced).

We were surprised that the restaurant was closed for the evening. The receptionist gave us some options for an evening meal - they were all very helpful at the desk. There is a vending machine in the main building, however, we discovered that our key to Block B (where most of the bedrooms are) did not fit the door to that area - also the machine was only taking notes.

Breakfast, we were surprised to find tables reserved - not sure if that is a common practice in this hotel or whether there were specific groups visiting - however, there was plenty of room and the buffet was just about being replenished fast enough for everyone in the room.

If going into the town, please be aware that, along to the left of the station main door, there is an archway into the building marked "zum Markt" which is a shortcut up some stairs and across a bridge to the town - it saves walking the long way around the road.

Generally this hotel was fine for a short stay for a brief visit to the area. However, I would say that I felt it was overpriced for what I got (although this is a very expensive part of Germany), its more cheap weekend break standard of hotel that happens to have pool and sauna. That said, I would go back because it is OK and the position is good.

My colleague and I stopped at this Hotel last April during a tour of Germany. The location is in the center of the town and easily accessible and the price quite reasonable as well. The room, though quite comfortable, was a bit small for two but it did boast a comfortable balcony facing the stream as well as the train station. The view of surrounding hills and mountains was pleasant and the Breakfast provided was as was to be expected of B&B fare. If I find myself again in Berchtesgaden I will select this venue the next time. There were a number of pubs close by which was another plus. Parking was available in the rear courtyard.

Room Tip: Have a look at the room before committing though there should be a good selection there. The size of...

This was a wonderful hotel. The view from our balcony was a glacial river running in front of mountains. The room, the pool, all very clean. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. We were right across the street from the train station, We were going to take the train into Salzburg for a day, but the staff instructed us to take the bus instead. It dropped us off closer to the heart of Salzburg than the train. We were able to see downtown Berchtesgaden by foot. The restaurant in the hotel was excellent. The breakfast included with the room had a good variety of food. We would definitly stay here again.

Room Tip: the rooms on the front side of the hotel have a wonderful view from their balcony
