Pension Haus am Berg

Reviewed 1 January 2012

I was there with my boyfriend september 2011, and if we ever planning a trip to Berchtesgarden again, this will be the place.
Mr. and Mrs Sandler were lovely, even though mrs. Sandlers english could be better, and Mr. Sandler does not speak english at all, but he does just all the menwork in the house, so it doesn't really matter, but he smiles always when we saw him. But their helpers were better at speaking english and now they are educating their own daughter so that she can take the business one day. But if you do not know german at all, you can manage, we did, and with out much of a strugle.
Our room was nice, but if we ever come again, we will want to make sure we get one of those room with a balcony. Those were really nice. We did have a very little extra room, in our rooms, It was between the bathroom, and the bedroom. It was a little room, with a tiny table, sofa and a quite big wardrobe. And there was another wardrobe in the bedroom too, so I could take over the hole little tiny room, just for my own clothes and other girly things (like make up, and accessories).
There is a fireless internet, and if you want to use it ask for the key.
The breakfast is nice, and they serve cake every sunday.
Many have complained how hard it is to climp up from the bus/trainstation. Not really. Yes, it is a hill, but it is managetable. We didn't even use any taxi or car to get our luggage from the trainstation to the house. And that wasn't even a totally big task if you have wheels on your suitcases (which nearly every model nowdays has). There is a good and easy roate from the station to the house. There is a bridge over the traintracks (to get there you have to climb stairs, but they are the only ones in this route, these staris starts at the left side of the station building (when you watching it from the busstops and the traffic cirle)) and after that you go by little house with funny statues, and by a little pub, and then you are on the main road, which you follow up (by the movenbick icecream restaurant) and the you turn right to the Am Brandholz street and to the end of it, where the Pension Haus am Berg is.

Room Tip: Those with the balcony, towards the centre of the town, were very nice, so make sure you get one of...

We stayed six nights in late May in Room 4, with a large balcony facing west rather than south but still with fantastic views of the Watzmann. The guesthouse is on a residential street, close to the center of town but up a steep hill from the train station and even the nearest bus stop. The local tourist tax (a few euros per person per day) entitles you to free bus service throughout the entire region; Salzburg requires a small supplement and is less than an hour away by bus. It’s an easy and pleasant walk from town (maybe fifteen minutes from the train station and five from the bus stop, or a bit less going downhill), but not something you would want to do with luggage if you don’t have a car. A trail which begins at the end of Am Brandholz right next to the guesthouse makes a nice alternative way to get into town.

Luckily, Brigitte Sattler was able to pick us up from the train station when we arrived, and her husband Albert was able to drive us back down on the day of our departure. Taxis are also available.

We arranged everything by email (in German, though I assume Frau Sattler can handle correspondence in English as well; her responses were always prompt, clear, and friendly) a few weeks ahead of time, which was probably necessary, as the guesthouse seemed to be full during our stay. It’s not hard to see why—its location above town makes for better views and quieter nights than you might find elsewhere, the entire place is impeccably clean and well-maintained, and the prices are reasonable for the area.

The architecture and décor are über-Bavarian. Room 4 was plenty large for two guests, and both the bathroom (two sinks) and the balcony were huge. Small amenities like a drying rack on the balcony and lots of hooks in the bathroom made the stay even more pleasant, as did the computer, refrigerator (both for guests’ use and for the reasonably-priced honors-system beverages), and umbrellas available for use. If you ask a day or two ahead of time, the Sattlers can get you two tickets to the Jennerbahn (the highest cable car in the area and well worth the cost) at a significant discount.

The pension offers only breakfast, so going into town is necessary for other meals. Most bus routes end in the early evening, so using public transportation to eat dinner outside of town would be tricky at best. Breakfast was typical German fare, plentiful and of a high standard, served with a smile by Frau Sattler at your table rather than buffet-style. All of the guests (primarily but not exclusively older Germans during our stay) seemed happy with the guesthouse. I would recommend it to anyone.

The Guest House am Berg is situated in the picturesque township of Berchtesgaden, south Germany. The town is surrounded by the Alps including Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest where many of the policies of the Nazi Party were developed. In winter, covered with snow these Alps must be spectacular but we were more than happy with the stunning views in all directions. The common balcony (our room did not have one) provides a great view over the town at all times of the day. We arrived by bus from Salzburg and needed to take a taxi to the guesthouse both because it is up a steep hill and we didn’t know its location. Guests are provided with a card to access free public transport not only in Berchtesgaden but through other towns and tourist destinations in the valley and on the hill. We used this extensively and saw many things in out of the way places simply by staying on the bus.
Th Pension Haus is small and run very personally and efficiently by husband and wife team Brigitte and Albert. Bridgette wears the traditional dirndle and plays happy polka and folk music over breakfast while she serves guests. Rooms are spotlessly clean and the atmosphere is enhanced by a bears tea party and nick-nacks strategically placed around the ‘haus’. Note there are 3 stories and no lift.
We walked into the pretty town most days where there are many restaurants and cafes and at least one supermarket. The walk back up hill, with the only alternative ,if you don’t have your own transport, being a taxi. The only food served is breakfast but some rooms have kitchen facilities.
Most guests during our stay tended to be older rather than younger. I’m not sure how younger children would fit in?
However, we thoroughly enjoyed our eight days in Pension Haus am Berg and only wished we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a balcony view.

My wife and I Love Berchtegaden in Bavaria and Frau Sattler (or Brigitte as she likes to be called) made our stay very welcome. With a choice of breakfast and the room with alpine views cleaned daily we would recommend you try this place out. They have been awarded 3 stars in the guesthouse guide and deserve them all.
