Alpenhotel "garni" Weiherbach
Ranked #5 of 52 Berchtesgaden B&B and Inns
Reviewed 17 August 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Alpenhotel Weiherbach for one night in August 2012. It is located out of town so we had to get a taxi from the train station with all our luggage etc. I can't remember exactly how much it was but less than 20 euros. On arrival the the lady who checked us in was pleasant enough and gave us our room details. The room was nice, fairly dated decor but clean enough with a little balcony with a lovely view. Once we'd got settle and changed we went back down to reception (about 19:00) to ask about the free wi-fi - there was no one at the desk but a telephone on the reception desk - which i rang for about a minute and no reply. We went out for a meal in the evening and returned at about 20:30 and again no one around to ask about the wi-fi and no one answering the telephone, This was very frustrating as we specifically booked a hotel with free wi-fi access. If she had given us the relevant info' when we'd checked in that would have helped - but to have a hotel and have no one available to answer guest questions / queries in the evening is disgusting.
The location of the hotel is good - as previous reviews mention it is a good 20-30min walk into town and a steep hill coming back up but the view is lovely and well worth it.
Breakfast was the usual buffet and had good choice.
Overall this was an ok hotel in a great location - but in my opinion, the staff really let this place down.

The day had gone very badly with Stelvio being closed to prepare for a cycle race - delaying the journey - then the mother of all stormsgave more delay. The 6pm deadline loomed & passed. I was in regular telephone contact with the hosts from the car but was expecting to find somewhere else. On arrival, the family were presnt, doing other tasks. Luckily were able to provide the room ! Phew.
The wifi reception's very weak at the front of the hotel & I had to sit in reception. Breakfast was sooper.

Stayed for one night en route to Austria. We managed to find the hotel by 5.30pm really conscious of the 6pm cut off point for check in as per other reviews and also the email we received from the hotel. This did have an impact on our day as we were so conscious of it. However the hotel was lovely - whilst we didn't try the pool, the rest of the hotel was nicely kept and decorated. Our room was quite spacious as was the bathroom as well as being very clean, and we had a balcony with lovely views of the mountains.
We walked into the town on the evening - this was a 20 minute walk up and over the mountainside which was a little strenous (and useful to have a torch on the way back!) but the location was fine for us. Breakfast in the morning was very good with an excellent selection of breads, fruits, yoghurt, meats, cheee and eggs. We thought the hotel was relatively good value, well located and of a very good standard.

Room Tip: Nice to have a balcony but unsure whether all rooms have them or not.

Booked a one bedroom apartment for myself, my husband and sons age 15yrs and 10 years mainly because of the proximity to Berchestgaden town and also the fact it has an indoor pool. Booking was made through Booking, com. There was some initial cock up with the paying of the deposit as the Plenk family insist that no credit card payments can be accepted for deposits etc. I sent signed travellers cheques in Euros which I had signed in the wrong place, not signed at all!..a breakdown in communication but it resolved itself in the end.

The location of the hotel is very good, Up on a hill out of Berchestgaden (about 20 minute walk into town down the hill or 30 minutes back up it - and its quite a climb). Good selection of Restaurants of which we sampled Goldener Bar, Eidelweiss Hotel, Cafe Am Luitpoldpark & Bier Adam (each i've reviewed seperate in the restaurant section). Reasonable prices at most.

During our stay we visited Eagles Nest, Weitzman therme pool, Lake Konigsee, Satlzburg and Kaprun town and nearby lake at Zell Am See, (GREAT FOR SWIMMING) and Munich Zoo which was fantastic.

Overall, we had a great stay. The weather was scorching, the pool was very clean and very cool and was a god send in the heat. The kids loved it.

We stayed in the self catering flat(2 bedrooms-can sleep 4, kitchen, bathroom, living room, small terrace/balcony). The flat was spacious, clean, very well equipped and in a scenic, tranquil location but still only 15minutes scenic walk from town. When leaving the hotel turn right and go up the hill and through the woods, then carry on straight along flat ground for 150yds and then turn left down hill through the outskirts of town right into the centre. Staff were very friendly and helpful at hotel and will assist if unsure about most things. Last tip, take an umbrella/waterproof and suncream, weather changable in the mountains.

Room Tip: If 3 or 4 people, go for flat

Never had a chance to sleep there because unbeknownst to hotels.com or whomever, they won't register you after 6 pm!! There is a phone which you can supposedly use to enter, but they don't answer. The managers are sleeping there, apparently - but forget about checking in. They insisted on charging an 80% cancellation fee saying they were charged it by the booking agent, but hotels.com says they and the hotel don't charge the fee. There was no give and take; after spending 200+ euros to sleep at the Intercontinental that night (excellent) I asked if the fee could be applied to the next night so I wouldn't be out completely. The answer of course was "no". The sign on the hotel is even a different name than the one on the site, so how do they - whatever. Good luck.
