“Do - not - miss - this”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

If you don’t mind heights, this cable car from Mittenwald to an alpine mountain top is the one thing not to miss out on if you’re in the area. That’s because once you’re at the top, you have views across the Alps, right into Austria, as well as the valley and plain that Mittenwald sits in. If you want to go hiking in the Alps, there’s nothing to stop you, but dress accordingly, it can be cold. And slippery.

If you don’t feel like walking, there’s a chalet at the cable car destination which serves hot drinks and lets you view the scenery from inside glass.

No reservations are required for the cable car, it’s simply first come first served. But make sure you don’t miss the last cable car down.

“Great ride, accessible hikes and a relaxing time”
Reviewed 25 August 2013

We enjoyed taking the Karwendelbahn, round trip. At the top, we walked out the door onto an excellent trail -- easy trails for everyone and a few more challenging ones. We had decided ahead not to make the descent and were glad we did -- we only had sneakers with us and the gravel surface was quite slippery. Views are spectacular, especially if you go through the tunnel pass. Wonderful way to spend almost an entire day. Pack a lunch or enjoy the restaurant. We brought refillable water bottles but could not find potable water -- the water in the restroom is marked as unpotable (in German, which was not terribly clear). If drinking water were more accesible this would be a better location...but it's possible we just didn't know how to find it. :-(

“Brilliant cable car, beautiful mountain !”
Reviewed 4 August 2013

This is a good outing for everyone as there is a dramatic cable car ride nearly to the summit and then an exhibition with viewing "tube" out over the edge and a restaurant which would all be easy access for the less mobile. For the more agile there is a little walking to get to the very top and some wonderful views over Bavaria and the Karwendel area. For the really agile it is the start of some high mountain walks along the ridges. There are wonderful wild flowers in summer and when we went in July, a little snow too.
There can be a queue for the cable car but they go quite often so it does move quite quickly. You may rent a baby back carrier and leave your buggy at the bottom if you wish to stroll about up there to see all the views etc.

“A must if you are in Mittenwald.”
Reviewed 9 April 2013

This really is a must see if you are in Mittenwald. Used a 3 euro discount I received from the hotel and the total round trip was 20 euro's. Wonderful views of the surrounding valleys, hills and mountains. Limited hiking in the winter but I was still able to follow some trails. Trails are open in the summer but the atmosphere when snowing is quite nice. Pack a Lunch or visit the restaurant which has a limited menu but it is still good hearty food with good local brewed beer. The walk through the tunnel to the other side of the mountain is worth the breath taking views to the other side of the mountain range. Great for all ages. The weather changes quite fast up there so remember to pack accordingly.

“Up up and awayyyy!”
Reviewed 22 January 2013

The cable car is amazing. Like flying to the top of the world! Expensive, but worth it! Once up, there's a chalet-refuge with hot cocoa and snacks and an amazing view....you can trek the mountain, visit the little alpine museum, and go through the middle of the mountain with a tunnel that is bored right through...come out the other side and you are on top the mountain range overlooking a precipitous slope!
