We took the cable car up (cars date from 1950s/60s) - not the highest hill, but very steep and scenic - and walked back down. A very pleasant and enjoyable stroll mostly on good paths which took just an hour or two.

Inexpensive cable car ride, easy access from the town centre. View from the top was fabulous and the quality and cost of the food and drink at the top was surprisingly good value for a captured market. We walked down after lunch (2.5hrs) via a well maintained path with lovely views. Popular with locals and tourists alike.

We took the short walk up to the Laber Bergbahn from the town. The walk is rather scenic and passes close to the outdoor pool (closed in May )and lovely residential houses. The ride up is in a small cable car which looks pretty old, similar to the ones you see in the very old Bond/war movies - I loved it. The views from the top are amazing - our day however had patchy mist which meant at times we couldn't see much but the mist gave it an ethereal feeling. Lots of walks from here - make sure you have good walking shoes - flip flops (yes, really, we saw them!) do not make sense in this terrain.
The Gasthaus/restaurant serves simple but good tasting food. I really enjoyed my gulaschsuppe mit brot - perhaps one of the best I've had. Local beer was good according to some of the locals we chatted too. A perfect complement to a walk around Oberammagau. I wish we could have stayed longer and done more walking. However, a good reason to return.
This Bergbahn is free with the Konigscarte if you have one.

If you enjoy vistas, sour above the tree tops to the mountain top for a spetactular view of Oberammergau and the surrounding area. On a clear day, one is able to see Munichen in the far distance.

The Laber Bergbahn base station is set well above the village at the junction of several footpaths into the surrounding mountains. The best view is in the clearer winter air which seems to make the Bavarian Alps seem a bit closer.

There is a friendly Gasthaus at the summit serving good, simple meals and excellent local beer. Prices are reasonable and no different to those you find down in the valley.
