very nice restaurant which serves traditional Bavarian food, and even has its own beer!
the service is good, prices are a bit higher than usual in Germany, but you get good food for money value in an perfect atmosphere.

This was the first time our family of 6 (four teenage / student sons) had visited Bavaria. Oberammergau was the perfect location to explore the villages and countryside and visit Ludvig 2nd's fairytale castles. We were delighted with this hotel - superb balconies, very comfortable and well equipped rooms, and we had a quirky bathroom with window into the bedroom (fitted with a blind for the less exhibitionist guests). The restaurant was excellent and great value - which was just as well as we kept being too late for other places in town which seem to stop serving before nine.
We made good use of the excellent local swimming pool and wellness centre, but it might be an idea if the hotel could lay on a bus or provide a taxi service, as we would have been stuck without a car. We would most certainly go back to the Maximilian. I'm only giving 4 stars as it seemed a bit expensive. But the staff and facilities were great.

First let me confirm this is a very nice and generally comfortable hotel in a beautiful location.
The problem is that it is clearly overrated. I booked expecting a 5* hotel and indeed the price is 5*. Unfortunately my expectation of 5* do not include dangling cords from the TV set, local loud radio with ads in the breakfast area, used glasses not being cleaned up or replaced in room, fruit basket and coffee amenities not being systematically refilled, very small mirror in the bathroom, vanity mirror and hair dryer hanged over the toilet seat, no conditioner, weak internet or none, no fitness center, no pool ( you could go to the city public pool for free, but I could do that if I stayed at the camping site too) ... and very naked folks from both genders strolling around in the small spa area ( sauna, steam room, etc). Ah, and please ask hotel designers to use the facilities before deciding on those uncomfortable fashionable options: seats so uncomfortable you can't relax in room seating area, opening in the bathroom with direct view to the toilet seat from the bed (don't forget the shades and do not use lights at night).
That said, the place is fantastic with a lot to do and our experience was very relaxing nevertheless. We even decided to stay an extra night at the same hotel.

I was at the Maximilian for the second time. Only one night to visit my daughter.
Like last time, the experience was truly excellent. Very very friendly staff. Rooms are great, everything is there. I can recommend this for everyone who likes the combination of a five star hotel feeling and a very friendly family type environment.

We just spent 2 nights at the Hotel Maximilian. It was lovely. Small hotel but very comfortable, modern rooms. The balconies were such a treat to sit and watch the beautiful surrounding mountains. The breakfast was only ok but being Southern Americans, we like a bigger breakfast. Food was fine, just limited choices and nothing special. Many things to do within a 60-90 minute drive.

No doubt the best hotel in Oberammergau, with only a few downsides.
Really great rooms (Superior and De Luxe) with all you need just like any large city luxury hotel. Nice balcony where you can enjoy the sunset viewing the nice mountainous surroundings. OK breakfast and a good restaurant.
Unfortunately there are roads on all balcony sides. The roads are not too busy, but still traffic noice is a bit of a disturbance.
Service at breakfast is slow, even with few guests.
Hotel service in general is far less than expected from a 5 star hotel.
(No pick up arriving in Oberammergau by hotel car as promised and did not even bother to call for a taxi. Only provided me with the number to call my self) Service in the restaurant is good.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a superior or de luxe room. They have glass walls to the bath room, separate shower and b...
