“A very nice old hotel”
Reviewed 27 February 2014

We went to this hotel for just an overnight stay so that we could travel to see the Zugspitz and Partnachklamm gorge which are both easily accessible from this hotel. The view is definitely one of the most spectacular hotel room views I've every had. The hotel is an older hotel but it is well kept. The rooms were very big and fairly comfortable - bar the pillows but there was a special pillow menu which we should have availed of! We had a room over the bar but there was no noise of disturbance from it maybe due to to the time of year, due to the fact that it was too cold to sit outside although this maybe annoying in the summer months. The breakfast was very tasty. And staff were very friendly and helpful. Also has a handy wall which gives maps of the walking trails available close by which I thought was a nice touch. We had dinner in the restaurant which was tasty, service was a little slow but all in all a very nice little hotel. Small thing to note this hotel takes a small additional fee of €4 per room for our one night stay as a kind of tax I think.

Room Tip: take advantage of the pillow menu!

We arrived here after a very long drive… so we were absolutely tired.

First impression was very bad. Arrived at reception and the woman seemed a little unfriendly. Needed the usual information i.e.. credit card number, which when it was being completed on the form she went to serve another couple and left us standing for about 20 minutes with the finished form. They too were checking in and had 101 questions. Think she should have told them to wait their turn or to begin completing forms while she finished checking us in… or get more staff!

We booked and paid for two double deluxe rooms. They then tried to fob us off with one single. I don't mind sleeping in a single but if I'm staying for 5 nights, which was the plan, I want space and want what I've paid for. So I had to question this… to which the same girl seemed a little put and brought a male colleague to deal with me. He wasn't apologetic just tried to tell me that the hotel was busy… which is not my problem. I'd booked and paid in advance.

I was given a double room, which cost the same as the first. However, the second room had complimentary water, fruit and chocolates but the first didn't. I feel bad when I moan about little things like this… but if both rooms were deluxe and cost the same… why not the same complimentary arrival gift. So I asked…. the answer in short was that they were in the room by accident because we had swapped rooms. Gift intended for someone else. Lucky me you could say. But this hacks me off a little because the way he phrased it was … the gift was for clients paying the full rate. Same deluxe room etc etc.. But my argument would be that if you want to attract customers… then all guests upgrading to these rooms should get the same treatment regardless of where they purchased the room. We got ours from Expedia and hence, it was clear that the gift was not intended for such guests. Then why sell on Expedia… surely such welcoming gifts are more likely to make the person rebook direct!?

As for the second room didn't even have a complimentary bottle of water and the mini bar had been emptied!!!??? But they take your credit card details for such things don't they!?

The room, 2nd impression was dirty and dated. Needed water too… surely this is a necessity for travellers!!!!??? Pubic hair on toilet…. the kind of bath you really don't want to get into because all brown marks on side where tap had dripped. Huge room with an amazing view… but not central to town and on the road side, so better hotels in the centre I think.

However, the Peacock bar and restaurant was a pleasant surprise and the 3rd impression later that first day. A very pleasant and friendly American girl serves in the bar…. really really nice and very welcoming. A very modern bar with cool music, comfortable chairs etc A surprise considering how dated the bedrooms are!

As for the gym… it was smaller than my bedroom. Not very inspiring. This needs to be better for those of us who don't ski.

Only ate breakfast here… it was okay. Plenty of choice.

Left after two nights.

We loved our stay in this hotel. Fabulous sized rooms with lovely views. Gret value for money with ease of access and parking on site. Perfect for a winter stay. We also had dinner in the restaurant which we thoroughly enjoyed. Really impressed with this hotel for the price as it also included complimentary breakfast. Our only complaint is that we didnt have time to stay longer and relax in the hotel. If you want to stay in GP stay here.

We stayed at this hotel in August. The hotel is beautiful with gorgeous scenery. We had a huge balcony (although shared with a few others), and overlooked the restaurant. We were given a free breakfast, which unfortunately due to time constraints that morning, we were unable to use. The room was huge! Comfortable bed. I wouldn't say the cleanest room, only because things were stained over time, and the rooms were dated. There was no air conditioning, so in 30 degree heat, we struggled. We didn't want to leave the patio door open for the night breeze once we went to bed because of the fact we were sharing the patio. Bathroom was smaller, but clean. The elevator was so tiny we couldn't get the luggage carrier in it, so we had to carry our suitcases up the stairs. With 2 little kids, that was exhausting. Waking up in the morning to the view of the mountains was the highlight. The location was wonderful.

Stayed at Sonnenbichl for 2 nights last week. Hotel is in a great location, easy to get by car with free parking, large lot. pleasant 20 minute walk to old town through beautiful neighborhood. If you are there for 2+ nights, you will be given a Garmisch Partenkirchen card for free rides on the bus. Bus stop is maybe 1 minute walk from hotel and we took it several times since weather was unusually hot for this time of year. We paid extra for the larger room and mountain view with a balcony, definitely worth it. As is typical of older hotels, no A/C but room was comfortable with windows open. Did close windows at night to keep out street noise and it was very quiet.
Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. Front desk is super efficient, they keep city maps, bus schedule and train schedule in stock and quickly answered all of our questions. Be sure to take Zugspitzebahn to top of Zugspitze, it's a trip not to be missed and worth every penny. Highlight of our trip so far (2 weeks so far in Bavaria). Breakfast is delicious, postcard view of mountains from terrace. Only disappointment is that our room (404) is showing some age but it was clean and bed comfortable so no complaints, especially with the great summer special price. Enjoyed the indoor pool with its therapeutic bubble bench (far side of pool, look for blue button next to bench under the water).
Garmisch Partenkirchen itself is adorable, great chocolate shop (Amelia), numerous fantastic restaurants. Only 45 minutes to Italian border, enjoyed a fantastic Italian meal at Colosseo, sat on balcony with fantastic mountain views which provided a grand finale to our stay.

We were pleasantly surprised by the large rooms, largest ones we experienced during 2 weeks in Austria & Germany. Breakfast buffet presented a nice variety of options, hot items varied some by day. Breakfast was leisurely enjoyed on the patio with a beautiful view of the mountains. We had two adjoining rooms at end of hall which were very quiet. Indoor pool.

Stayed here for a short trip while visiting friends in the area. The hotel has sublime views and is a short ride into Garmisch Partenkirchen and from there, towards the Zugspitz - a visit not to be missed. There is a very nice terrace to enjoy the local weissbier or a meal. Ask for a room with mountain view. Very clean with great food and friendly staff. Would like to have stayed longer!

Room Tip: Ask for mountain view at the front
