Reviewed 18 March 2012

We heard about staying at the Igloo City from friends and decided we needed to experience it for ourselves. It is not an inexpensive spend, but definitely a unique experience.

We began the evening with about a half hour of tips and information session at the restaurant near the Igloo City. The guides talked about safety, what we would do during our stay and what to expect. They provided a lot of good information and were very helpful. Then everyone was handed a sleeping bag to carry the 10 minute walk to the igloo city. Recommendation is to take a back pack - you don't need much for this adventure.

The group heads to the igloos where you can leave your things in your assigned room and then spend time looking around everyone else's room at all the ice sculptures. Every room is decorated differently, all tied to a theme that changes every year. The sculptures are very cool and creative.

We then headed to the bar to drink some Gluehwein and non-alcoholic drinks. This was a social time within your own group or meeting others. Afterwards, we were given a tour around the Zugspitze area (at night) - the church, May pole, gondola, etc. While we were touring the guides prepared the tables for our fondue dinner. Shortly after dinner was finished, several people went out to go sledding down the hill towards the restaurant - in the dark with flash lights. It was lots of laughter and fun for all. You had the choice to continue to drink at the bar, socialize, and/or sign up for time in a jacuzzi. Nice way to warm up before snuggling into your sleeping bag for the night.

The padding on the ice beds were comfortable and the sleeping bags they provide do keep you warm. It was about 1 degree Celsius in our room (romantic family igloo) through out the night.

At 7AM we were awoken with service of hot tea in our room. We had about 20 minutes to pack up our gear and meet outside to walk down to the restaurant for our German buffet breakfast.

Drinks are not included in your price, except for tea and one complimentary Gluehwein. However, drink prices are reasonable. Food was ok, but don't go on this adventure for the food. The guides kept everyone entertained and on the go, which helped keep you moving to avoid getting too cold. You do need to bundle up like you are going skiing (hats, gloves, warm socks, warm boots) to stay warm before going to bed. Warm pajamas or long underwear and warm socks and hat are recommended for bed time.

Guides are great, definitely a unique experience, but it is pricy. You are in freezing temperatures the entire time, so plan accordingly. I would recommend it to others if they are up to this adventure, but probably would not spend the money to do it again.

Room Tip: If you want privacy and not sleep with others select a "romantic" option.
