Cozy, but not without faults

Review of Hotel Bavaria
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Sept 2015
It's a small traditional hotel at nice location - close to train station and to center (less than 10 min to either), but on the quiet street. It is cozy with terrace, winter garden and fireplace on the ground floor and a small garden outside. At the end of property runs the river, so with window open you are constantly soothed by the sound of running water
The room (one person) was rather small and basic (only shower, not fridge), but it had a small safe. Wifi is free (password at reception) and of good quality, but inexplicably it was absent inside the room for couple of days, while available everywhere else.
Breakfast is good and bio, although as it is often the case in German hotels of this class, lacked in variety of vegs and fruits.
Hotel FAQ book (English text) was copied from their partner hotel Garmischer Hof, so it was confusing, as some referred amenities simply do not exist at Hotel Bavaria.

Four of us (2 couples) ended up here for 2 nights after their sister hotel, Garmische Hof, had screwed up our booking. We were told that rooms at the Bavaria were very full and both couples would need to move room for the second night. One of the two rooms we were then given for the first night was fine. The other was awful - more or less a corridor with a bathroom, with two single beds arranged end to end. There was a cigarette butt on the floor. Our tour rep put pressure on the Garmische Hof to lean on the Bavaria and, magically a better room appeared. Maybe we were just unlucky, but....
Apart from that, the hotel's fine as a mid range 3 star: quiet, not a bad location, nice garden

Stayed here for one evening on our way to Amsterdam from Venezia. Check in was a breeze and they had our reservation on file. The room was very clean and cozy. This hotel has a lot of old world charm and is not your typical hotel. It lacks many things which make a hotel a hotel. But nevertheless, our stay was semi-comfortable and the breakfast was nice. The location of the hotel was also very pleasant. I would probably stay again if I was traveling this road again. Good bang for the buck.

The only negative that I have to add is that the beds were very uncomfortable. I was staying with my wife and they gave us a room that had two small single beds pressed together. They literally connected two small beds together. The blankets on each bed were too small and the pillows were uncomfortable as well. However, I still managed to get a good nights rest and enjoyed breakfast the following morning. This is not a room for those looking for any type of romance. lol.

Very cozy and quaint hotel at a great location near the train station. A lot of old world charm. Excellent breakfast buffet. Very reasonably priced. We were sorry that we could't stay longer. We'll be back!

This hotel is more like a bed & breakfast instead of a hotel, giving you an experience of the local way of living.

Though it may not have the complete facilities of a hotel, it provides local charm which you could not experience in a hotel.

The hotel is a traditional Bavaria building which is common in this area and are the types of buildings where most locals stayed in. On the other hand, a number of the hotels in Garmisch-Partenkirchen are pretty much the same as those that you find in cities, rectangular functional blocks efficient in operations but lack in local charm. So if you are looking for a place where you could experience the local way of living and within a reasonable price range, this is the place you may want to take a look but do not expect it to be a luxurious B&B as it is rated a 3 stars hotel.

The hotel is situated in a local neighbourhood but within walking distance to the main Gamisch shopping street.

The main cons of the hotel is that there are a few levels but there are no lifts. Hence, if you have lots of luggages or knee problems, you may want to take this into consideration.

One of the slight disappointment is we were not given the internet password upon checkin. Only after we reached the hotel after dinner and had shower did we realized that a password was required. That was already past 9pm and to drag the feet down to the reception on a cold freezing night is not a nice feeling. Further, only one set of password was given and it could only enable one device to be connected to the internet. This was not made known to us at the point of asking for the password. Otherwise, we will try asking for another set as there were two of us.

The buffet breakfast included in the room rate was sufficient to fill you up but lack any hot food. The bread provided was one of the best we had in our nearly one month trip in Germany, Czech and Austria. Not sure if it was home made but highly recommended to try them.

My wife and I have just spent 8 weeks in Europe. We had done a mixture of adventure type activities e.g. mountain biking and trekking in the Alps and touring major cities in western Europe. This was the best value hotel. The room was large and comfortable, staff very warm and friendly (even though we spoke very little German), and the hotel food delicious. If we are in Garmisch again this is where we'll stay.
