“A few tips”
Reviewed 20 September 2011

We had a wonderful time but I would like to give my thoughts:
•Enjoyed the Italy tour, the Castle and the Palace the most.
•I didn’t see any where on the web site discussing the A/C or heat something should be added about those items. I didn’t know the resort didn’t have A/C.
•The food at the resort was ok, dinner at the Pullman Place Was not great, my steak was extremely tough. We ate at other the restaurants and enjoyed the food there, true it’s typical American stuff but it was good. When the down stairs restaurant is open it should close the door because of all the kids screaming.
•Had a massage and it wasn’t 5 star by any means. The masseuse was nice but it was in a regular room nothing relaxing about that.
•The 3 country tour should really say a site seeing tour because you don’t really get to see any cities but one and the one you do, is not very good. The restaurant they take you to is overpriced and they didn’t give any other suggestions. They should re do that tour and focus on better villages.
•The Munich tour was nice, not very good for shopping; we were in the most expensive part of town.
•Maybe the resort could provide a quick reference guide on the language.
•A better movie selection is need so bring some DVD’s

After seeing the AFN commericials, numerous times, we decided that we would spend 3 days of our vacation here in August. We found the hotel very beautiful! If you want security you will have it here. Make sure you have your DOD identification, you will need it when entering the gates through the resort. There is a commissary close by and this place is close enough to the city center that you can get a bike and ride over to it. There was not air conditioning and it was hot, so we didn't want to spend time in the indoor pool since it was muggy. I think it would be a perfect place to go in the winter but just to hot without A/C in the month of August. It was a let down and wish we would have read the website better and picked up on the fact no A/C is provided. Only in the lobby and the restaurants. We would have found another hotel. The river runs close by so you can go watch kayakers and cool off in the ice cold water. If you want to immersed in the German culture you won't find it at the resort and is a great replica of a resort you would find in America. Overall the place was nice but didn't fit our needs for a hotel in August. If you want to cool down privately in your room with A/C after a long day of hiking, bike riding or exploring, I would't pick this hotel for that.....Probably a fantastic place for winter activities....

Located in the perfect place in Garmisch, Edelweiss provides tours, nice rooms, excellent service with outdoor hot tub, in-door pool, and lots of things to do with Kids and your own adult free time. We have loved it every time we have stayed there. Go in August for the summer mountain views or in February to catch some of the best skiing available.

Room Tip: ensure you get a balcon facing the Alpspitze-also there is no A/C but fans are available

The Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is one of five worldwide AFRC resorts catering to military personnel, their families, and Department of Defense federal employees. It's conveniently located in a very beautiful area in southern Bavaria near several ski resorts and the nearby Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. Designed to be a place for rest and relaxation, the hotel exudes an atmosphere of rustic calm. There is a stone fireplace with a roaring fire and rocking chairs in the lobby, serene elevator music playing throughout the hotel, and a variety of amenities for guests including internet, an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam rooms and sauna, fitness center, a wellness center (spa), a casino, arcade room, three restaurants, a coffee, snack and juice bar, a coin laundry for guests, and play area for children. Almost all rooms have balconies with spectactular views.

During my most recent stay this past weekend the hotel was full of young service members who ran up and down the hall like kids, slammed doors, and congregated at the jacuzzi until the wee hours of the morning. After two unsuccessful calls to the front desk to complain about the noise, I finally had to get dressed and speak to someone in person before any action was taken. I didn't start sleeping well until almost five in the morning and wound up sleeping in until ten. This isn't the first time that noise has been an issue, during previous stays I've had to call the manager to quell a domestic dispute in another room and witnessed MPs arresting a Soldier for alcohol related mischief. I also see a lot of kids wandering the hotel unsupervised because Mom and Dad are busy in the room. Since the hotel is designed to cater to service members and their families however, I expect to see things like this more at the Edelweiss than at a civilian hotel on the economy. It is still a great hotel in a wonderful setting and I love going there.

Another thing I like about the Edelweiss is the Pullman Place restaurant. I've been there so often that the wait staff and I recognize each other when come in to dine. The Pullman Place has an excellent menu and the service is always impeccable. Two of the items I look forward to there are the Porterhouse steak and the prime rib. I even had a smoked prime rib there for the first time that was utterly fantastic. For me the Pullman Place restaurant is reason enough to stay at the Edelweiss. We ate at the Market Station buffet for breakfast and went to Zuggy's Base Camp for snacks. The Market Station food was on par with what you'd get at any military dining facility and in my opinion is overpriced. Zuggy's has good hamburgers and beer but the service is very slow.

The are several pros to staying at the Edelweiss:
1. It is located on an American military installation and thus has an additional level of security.
2. Everybody speaks English..
3. The hotel and restaurants all take the dollar.
4. The gift shop staff will sell you tickets and arrange tours that originate at the hotel.
5. The restaurants serve American style cuisine.
6. They have TV channels in English and provide DVDs on request at the front desk.
7. They have a free underground parking garage.
8. The hotel is affiliated with an AFRC ski lift nearby.

Other good reasons to stay at the Edelweiss include fireworks shows and holiday events. I've also attended a conference at the Edelweiss and found it to be a pretty good place to have a seminar.

The Cons:

1.Edelweiss is too insulated so you really don't experience the local culture. It feels a bit like Disney World.
2. It is often the haven for busloads of servicemen and women looking to party for the weekend.
3. The food isn't German.

That being said, I had a good time overall and will be back again in a few months. Edelweiss is beautiful all year and is the perfect base for an economical ski weekend. If you can though, I'd recommend getting a room as far from the jacuzzi as possible and try to stay during the week when it is quieter.

We will inform our security department of your comments and to continue to have a presence in the hallways to ensure no further disruptions. We will also pass on your positive comments to our Pullman Place restaurant staff. It is a popular restaurant for good reason, they have great food and great service. The views...what can I say...breathtaking! We had a private driver bring 12 of us from Prague (Jay Pesta Private Tours - Prague). Didn't have to worry about trains and lugging our baggage around. Excellent way to go. We had 3 suites for 12 people. We tried to get 3 deluxe suites, but was only able to get 2. One was a loft suite. So we used one of the mattress from the beds from the loft downstairs. It beat using the sofa sleeper in the living area...very uncomfortable.
From there we took cabs to the train station to get around Germany. Cabs were not expensive and most were accommodating about going through security. Some would drop you at the front gate and it's ab a 5 to 10 minute walk to the reception entrance of the lodge.
Food was great in the Pullman's restaurant. The Buggy's restaurant on the LL was good as well. Especially when tired from sightseeing all day.
Would recommend to anyone able to stay there. Military owned, so must have appropriate privaleges to stay here.

Room Tip: Great place to stay for military families on Vacation.

Not overly inexpensive but a great location. It is truly picturesque
Out of a postcard. Good secure location. All speak English as they recruit a lot of their help from USA colleges. Very family friendly. R&R for military families. Service kids tend tone well behaved. They sponsor multiple tours to Germany, Austria and Italy. Well worth it. Have stayed their twice. About an hour south of Munich. A great city. We recommended the Treasury. And the Opera house. Good place to stay

Thanks for your recommendation. We agree, it is truly out of a postcard picturesque here at Edelweiss Resort. You should see it in the winter, just as amazing. Thanks again for your recent stay and review, we hope to see you again someday soon.

This was our first time staying at Edelweiss Lodge. We had stayed previously at the General Patton. The lodge is very beautiful and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

PROS:
Loved the extra large hot tub. It's as big as an in-ground pool. There is an indoor pool also.

Location is great, within walking distance of downtown or if you prefer, even closer to the bus stop. Buy the day bus pass at the gift shop.

Rooms were large and comfortable.

Spa services were excellent. Reserve early.

Close to the base, we walked over and rented a car for a day trip to Italy.

Lodge staff went above and beyond to help us.

Several day tours out of the lodge to choose from. Cost depends on the tour.

We did experience the special Chef's dinner at the Pullman's place, that was fun. We also did the Champagne Brunch at the Pullman place, that was the best meal we had on site. I recommend it.

CONS:
Restaurants in the lodge. The food was not very good and pricey. I don't know where they get their beef, it wasn't very good. I recommend going out to eat locally as often as you can, you will have a much better meal. Exception-Champagne Brunch at the Pullman.

Kids. I know that Edelweiss is a family friendly lodge but there were so many young kids running wild with no supervision, it was very nerve racking! We didn't experience that at the General Patton on our previous stay in Germany. I think because Edelweiss is so family friendly and encourages the kids with activities ( If I hear "it's a small world ever again, it will be too soon!) that we felt like we were in a school rather than on vacation. I think there were more kids there than in the school I volunteer in. Please don't get me wrong, I love kids but the parents need to take control and the lodge shouldn't allow them running around yelling. We thought once the weekend was over the kid population would diminish but it actually grew during the week. This is the reason we said we probably won't return to Edelweiss.

Thanks for your recent stay at Edelweiss Resort. We agree our staff do a great job of going "above and beyond" to ensure a truly memorable stay. We certainly are a family friendly resort. We do our best to ensure parents stay within line of sight of their children. Our only recommendation to experience the Edelweiss with fewer families and children is to visit when school is in session or during the week. We hope you will consider us once again for your next vacation. Thanks again for your positive review of the Resort.
