We spent 4 nights in the hotel's junior suite, the largest room. Lots of space, a TV that could be swiveled to face the sofa or the very comfortable bed. Good working desk space, lots of room in the closets, a large bathroom with both a tub and a separate shower stall. My husbands' complaint was that the room faced a courtyard and wall, which meant lots of privacy but no view of any kind. Very quiet for sleeping. I never saw into any of the other rooms, but I know they were all smaller.

Our only complaint with the room was with all the steps inside the room. There was a step up to the area with the bed, another step up in the bathroom to the tub and shower area, and still another step up to the toilet. We kept forgetting about them and nearly tripping, particularly at night. I don't see how anyone with problems with stairs could stay in this hotel because there are 6 stairs up to the lobby, 3 steps down to the elevator, also steps up from the parking lot to the back door. Stairs and steps everywhere!

Breakfast was OK, but not at the 5-star level for Germany or the 4-star level in the German part of Switzerland. Coffee is good, but there's not a lot of choice of either fruit or breads. We bought fresh figs at the supermarket just down on the corner and brought them to breakfast. What I really like was the skinless sausages which tasted like bratwurst and the crisp bacon without any fat.

We had two dinners at the hotel but none in the small Michelin-starred room. The main restaurant is a grill featuring American beef and a typical grill menu, rather short. The first night we had salad, my husband Schnitzel and me lamb chops. The Schnitzel was great, prepared in The Viennese fashion, not the German, but the lamb chops were slightly greasy and not as tender as I had hoped. On our last night we shared a Schnitzel, a salad, beans with bacon, and a delicious pear dessert. With water and wine the total for the second meal was just over 50 euros. We aren't young so we couldn't manage the large portions but the restaurant was very nice about letting us share and even divided the food in the kitchen and gave us both the condiments. We enjoyed our evening meals, but because of the limited menu and almost all the food grilled, we wouldn't have wanted to eat there on consecutive nights.

I had laundry done. You take it to Reception and pick it up from there in the evening. Cheaper than in large cities and very well done. Reception staff was helpful, and surprisingly a young woman who has lived in the UK greeted us on arrival and gave us directions about "popping" up to the spa area. We hadn't had lunch and the hotel doesn't do teas, but we were told to go to a boulangerie just inside the old gate to the town and had lovely tea and cakes. If you don't speak a word of German, you will have no trouble at this hotel.

My husband visited the spa area and enjoyed both the wet and dry saunas. But they weren't in operation on our last day.

I really enjoyed this hotel and would love to stay there again. Coburg was definitely worth a 4-night stay and this hotel was in an excellent location between the medieval center and the Victorian area near the station.

Room Tip: Check before you book if stairs are a problem. Don't book the junior suite if going up and down...

The Golden Traube is a lovely hotel, the rooms are smallish by US standards but have lots of storage and are comfortable. Our travel friends had a larger room. Our room on the 4th floor had a wonderful view of the enchanting rooftops and the Vesta Coburg up on the hill. Staff is very friendly and helpful, practically all speak english. The breakfast buffet is lavish with great breads, jams, cheese, really yummy deli style meats and fruit. They also have yogurts and eggs. It was really great food and served till 10:00 am. The restaurant is open for dinner and was superb, they rearrange the room and it doesn't even feel like the same place where you had breakfast.
There is a very nice seating area off the reception area where you can hang out and have a coffee or a cocktail. I really enjoyed our stay at the Traube it gave me a feeling of what the Europeon style of hotel is like.

We stayed at the Goldene Traube for two nights this month.

What a delightful hotel and what a great position, right next to the entrance gate into the Market square.
Our room was on the front of the hotel (room number 1) and was really nicely decorated and very spacious.
The room had a safe in it and also a small balcony with a view of the gate tower to the left.
The staff were polite, helpful and very pleasant to talk to.
As my German is not very good, it was good to find that everyone spoke excellent English.
We only ate Breakfast at the Hotel as we ate at different local restaurants each evening. Breakfast was very good though, with a selection of cold meats, cheese and the continental breakfast items that you would expect in europe, but also hot eggs, bacon, cereals, fruitjuice etc.
I would recommend this hotel to everyone and think that it should be anyones first choice if visiting Coburg.

Well done to the Management team, your hotel is a credit to you.

Although being on a business trip (yes, the hotel has free WLAN in the lobby !), I would definetly recommend this hotel also for tourist travelers. The rooms are small but nicely decorated and the staff is really helpful (they also ironed my shirt for free).

Forthermore, the pricing is fair and breakfast buffet offers all you need. The hotel is located directly in the heart of Coburg and only a few steps away from the city centre. While parking is limited, I would recommend going there by train and than take a taxi (ca. EUR 5,00) to the hotel.

We were very disappointed with the Goldene Traube. It is sold as a romantic quaint hotel in this beautiful old German town, but the place wasn't up to its billing--by a long shot. The rooms were very small and in need of fixing up, the beds poor, and they were incredibly hot (it was probably an 80 degree day and there was no air conditioning). The people were OK and the breakfast, while having some good food, was crowded and most of the good things went quickly. Look for another place in Coburg!
