Hotel Goldener Anker
Ranked #8 of 13 Hotels in Coburg
Reviewed 20 July 2012

My review is based in staying in many hotels throughout Germany for around 100 euros per night:

The Goldener Anker in Coburg was the worst hotel we stayed at in Germany. However it does have some redeeming qualities to note. Keeping in mind the rating is based on comparison of price point...

In the centre of the city so it was very convenient. We were there on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. There was a great market Thursday morning where we got fresh produce and the famous coburgers.

There was free parking but only two spaces in the garage so we had to pull our car in front of others. This meant we were awakened very early Thursday morning with a request to move our car so other guests could get out. However after we checked out the lovely hotel personnel let us leave our car while we explored the city.

The room itself was not up to standard for the price being charged. We had called and booked in advance asking for a bathtub for our baby. We were told the room would have a bathtub. However on arrival and check-in there was no bathtub. Also the cupboards were quite fragile, the pillows were horrible (unless you like them so soft they are nearly flat) and there was mold in the very tiny shower. However the bed was pretty comfortable and the tv had tons of channels to watch. The sitting area was nice and the room was huge.

The breakfast was included and was very good. Great yogurts and fresh fruit. Great meat and cheeses and you could fry up your own eggs.

They Had free wi-fi we were never able to connect to from our second floor room so again not worth the money we paid. We had booked two days but we left after one.

There was a great tapas restaurant close by called Bar Celona. Lovely owner and great happy hour tapas prices. They fit us in with our pram and took excellent care of us. This place is hopping so you might need to book in advance.

Also if you're not sure about stopping in Coburg give it a chance. The park, palace and fortress as well as the lovely people were worth a stop and a leisurely day.

This is the third time that we have stayed at his hotel and have only positive comments to make.

Professional staff, excellent food and comfortable rooms.

You will not be disappointed.

And the bonus, a beatiful city...

I'll be honest, I am puzzled that the hotel is NOTHING like the hotel
shown on the heading photo! It is actually in a medieval street in a rambling old building. A building which looks as if someone's dad decorated it in the 1970s and has been renovating bits and pieces of it ever since.

On the whole I rather liked it and we found the staff pleasant and friendly, it gives the strong impression of being family run with a personal touch On the plus side it was a very large comfortable bed, and it was quite cosy, very central and seemed clean . It is reasonably priced and had many customers. Once nice touch that would appeal to kids is the free sweets, fruit, hot chocolate etc. available in the lobby. And it has a fantastic location if you are sight seeing. We did not have a car, I don't know abuot parking, but it was easy walking distance to the main sights.

On the minus side it was not very well maintained, with holes in the carpet and (for instance) a disconnected pink bidet in our bathroom, together with a non working fan (so a bit smelly) and not enough hot water, and a shower that had a very fierce jet. The curtains had a 1 ft mismatch in length between the 2 curtains and none of the colours harmonised in the room, (interior decor it is not ) that's why I say it looks like someone's dad did it.

We had a meal at the Mexican restaurant at the hotel which was fine. The breakfast OK but some of the ham etc. looked as if it had been sitting around a while but a nice selection and someone would fry your egg to order. The lift very small and old. It also had plastic jugs of water at breakfast which contained stones and crystals which were supposed to give you bio energy (??) I imagine someone in the family is into that stuff.

I think if you are on a budget and /or with kids it would be a good find which is why I give it four stars. But you should be aware that it is NOT smart or chic and a bit more like staying in an average pub (if it was in the UK) - the last 30 years has pretty well passed it by!

Great location, I was given a very large room which had a bedroom, sitting room, and entry way. The shower had approx. seven shower heads! Parking was free and enclosed in the back hotel garage. 2 min. walk from town square and 5 min. walk through the square to Schloss Ehrenburg.
