“Avoid it, it's just a pretty picture and a fantasy”
Reviewed 30 September 2012

I can't give this place a terrible because it really is in a beautiful area. The castle has a stunning backdrop and I would love to hike around the area more.

But that said everything about visiting the castle itself is, in my opinion, not worth it at all.

1)Epic line to get tickets... like one of the worst in the world (that I have seen, and I have been to a lot of high traffic places). Also you have to get tickets at the village and not at the castle. This comes into play because they assign you a non refundable tour time and if you miss it... well you missed it. Also the ticket is fairly expensive.

2) Guided tour only. You can't walk around on your own. This sucks in my opinion. The tour guide may or may not speak good English. I don't mean to rag on people's language ability, but my tour guide had a harsh Bavarian accent. I personally could understand it but I heard several others on the tour complaining... so if English is not your first language or you struggle with accents, be warned.

3) Large tour group, small rooms. They cram a lot of people into your guided tour. The rooms obviously weren't meant for tourists, let along large groups.

4) Unfinished castle interior means short tour. Can't really blame anyone for Ludwig dying before he finished the place, but as a result it looks way bigger on the outside then you actually get to see on the inside. The tour is only around half and hour.

5) No photos inside. This is always bull in my opinion as non flash photography hurts no one. Forced to be discreet I only manged one really decent photo of the inside. Tip: Hang around back and wait for the tour guide to leave the room first.

Overall: Not worth it in my opinion. The external view makes a fantastic picture but the overall tourist experience will have you wishing you visited somewhere else. Sorry to burst the fairy tale bubble... but skip it unless you can live with the many faults.

“Too many people”
Reviewed 30 September 2012

The castle itself looks great, just as expected. However, the guided tour was a disappointment. The tour is very short (and very expensive), the castle is packed with tourist so there is almost no space to move. The audio-guide is not well-synchronized with the tour progress so much of the information gets lost. Would recommend to visit the site for the scenery, but save yourself money and nerves and don't go in.

“The quinessential Bavarian Castle, a must see!”

The art which was exemplified in this castle is truely amazing. The workmanship was astounding, considering when it was done 100+ years ago!

“A must see”
Reviewed 29 September 2012

You may have seen all the beautiful pictures in the brochures, unfortunately, real life is slightly less beautiful. The professional photographers get to wait for perfect weather, clear skies, white snow, whilst tourists contend with haze, poor camera angles and noisy crowds. Hey, live with it!

Fact is, it does not look as 'beautiful' face to face as you may have seen in the pictures, but up close, the sheer size and majesty is breathtaking.

A few pointers.

1) Its a bit of a hike up the side of the mountain, and you have to navigate between piles of equine dung deposited by the horses (drawing carts). I'd suggest you pay for the bus ride up the hill.

2) The are specific timings for English language tours, and audio-guides in English, for some reason, are not available for rental. Check the website for details.

3) Definitely take in the Marienbrucke for a great view of the castle

“Dream came true”
Reviewed 28 September 2012

I have wanted to visit this place for the last couple of years.
And this was one of the must-do for this trip to Germany. The huge disappointment was that majority of the Castle was covered by scaffolding and we were not able to enjoy the view of the castle. There was only one angle from which nice view it was still available; however it was not full...
Inside the castle is really fairytale dream. If someone uses their wildest imagination of beauty this is how it looks inside.
They had classic music concerts season and someone could book to see performance. We did not know about it, so missed the opportunity. It affected rest of the tourists though as tours were limited due to preparations in the castle.
