“Nice stop after the Castle”
Reviewed 13 October 2013 via mobile

We needed lunch following the Neuschwanstein Castle tour and this place is only about 10 minute walking on the way down the mountain. The staff was nice, but very busy. The menus were English and Japanese to assist my travel partners. It was all great and the food was furnished very quickly. I mean really quickly. Maybe 10 minutes after all 5 of us placed completely different orders. I will stop here each time I tour the castle.

We loved the little hotel located 5 minute walk from Neushswanstein castle. it is a 250 year old former home. the 10 bedrooms are all decorated differently and are charming. we had a room without bathroom. it wasn't an issue at all. the facilities were next door. Breakfast was a little lacking. we did not eat in the restaurant, but it is popular with people coming and going from the castle. they have hotspot for internet service, but we couldn't log on.it's a mile up from the street level, so driving past all those people walking was priceless!they give you a special key to the side door so you can come and go as you please after 6pm

We arrived quite late in the evening, to find the hotel completely shut up. Luckily we had read our booking instructions & called the owner to say we would be arriving late. He was very helpful, and explained our key would be in a key safe, which he gave us the code to when we arrived. In complete honesty, our first impressions of the place were not great. Firstly we couldn't find it! The hotel is not signposted anywhere in the village & even when you find it it doesn't say the name anywhere on the building! That said, the location is fabulous for access to the castle! We were also disappointed to discover that they stop serving food at 6pm, as do ALL of the other hotels in the village!! There is only one restaurant open in the evenings until 10pm, which overlooks a beautiful lake at the bottom of the village. Our room in the hotel was fine, it had a private toilet & a shower cubicle in the bedroom, a little strange, but hey! The hotel itself is a little dated, but has great Bavarian charm. We actually warmed to this place a lot during our short stay. The hotel offers free parking, and allowed us to leave our car there even after we had checked out. We actually ate lunch here before leaving Neuschwanstein, and it was lovely! All in all, it's a basic friendly Bavarian hotel!

We booked this hotel for our August 5-6 visit to Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. I read the hotel's reviews and wasn't sure what to expect. However, this hotel and our visit was wonderful!

First, the location can't be beat! The proximity to Neuschwanstein was fabulous, especially for our early morning hike to Marienbrucke. It seemed like the castle belonged only to us since no other tourists were there. Also, staying at this hotel allowed us to drive up the hillside, even though it meant fighting tourist crowds and horse carriages on the single road up. We received many nasty looks as we drove! However, being able to drive up ourselves was key because we were traveling with an extended family member with mobility issues.

We were checked in quickly by an employee pulling double duty as hotel manager AND waiter. Our rooms were comfortable and clean. (We booked rooms with private baths.) The nighttime breezes cooled the rooms considerably and it was a very comfortable, quiet night of sleep.

One downside, which didn't really matter since the rooms were affordable, was the lack of rooms for families. Our immediate family included two children, ages 8 and 13, so we booked two rooms and each parent took one child.

One other downside - being in a room by the shared bathroom. If you're a light sleeper, you will hear people in the hallway all night and some aren't considerate about keeping their voices down since others are sleeping.

As for the restaurant, breakfast was great. We ate lunch twice at the hotel and both times, the food was solid and just what we needed.

We pre-reserved tickets for both castles and were given a discount coupon to use when picking up the tickets. Reserving your tickets in advance is a great idea. It means you get to go in a much shorter line and have an arranged time to pick up your tickets for your pre-arranged tour time.

If we travel back to this area to visit these two castles, we would definitely consider staying at this hotel.

Room Tip: Request a room with a private bathroom AWAY from the shared bathroom for a quieter stay.

I picked this place because of the location up the hill very close to Neuschwanstein castle. I am a photographer and thought the close proximity would be good and it was. This place's website was very minimal and led me to believe this would be a bare bones experience. Also it was inexpensive & I believe you get what you pay for.
I turned out to be a big, lovely chalet type building complete with geraniums hanging all along the front. Our rooms were good size. The bathrooms were ok and the shower was big enough if not great. There was no AC and it was very hot while we were there, but since we were gone all day and the big windows cooled the rooms in the evenings at the higher elevation, it was fine. The rooms were very clean and I only have one negative comment on the whole experience - the bed. The bed wasn't great and instead of having a standard sheet and the duvet it had for the sheet something with the texture of a bath towel.

We had dinner 2 nights on one of the great outdoor patios ( go to the one farthest away from the castle for less tourists). It was lovely and the food was Austrian hearty fare - certainly not gourmet but good.

The next morning we walked up to the castle early, before the huge (and I do mean huge) crowds arrived and got some great photos with no one around.

I want to add a tip about seeing the castle. About 5 years ago my son & I came here intending to tour the castle but the line was several hours long so we went to Hohenschwangau and Linderhof instead which are both lovely and worthwhile. But I was disappointed to miss Neuschwanstein so I added this into this vacation itinerary. I went online to make reservations this time. It made a world of difference. I made the reservation for 10 AM ( I don't recommend you make it earlier because you have to pick up the tickets the same day and an hour ahead and the office doesn't open until 9 AM). That was a good time since it wasn't too busy yet. Later when we went back down to the little town with the ticket offices I saw that huge lines had formed again.

The whole staff were very nice and since we stayed a few days we got to know several of them. They had double duty handling the hotel guests and all the restaurant duties but always were extremely pleasant and helpful. There was no lift but since a few young men hauled our luggage up and down that was fine.

When almost all of the tourists had left in the early evenings, we had our castle view to ourselves
as we sipped our beers.

Room Tip: Some rooms do not have showers so request one if it matters to you.

1 word -superb location for me with a kid... this hotel just next to the castle for about 2-3 mins walk...

first, we bring the stroller and buy the tickets, whereby its too crowded that we need to wait a few hours for the queue, so we decide to go back hotel have a bath, take a rest and wait the time as printed in ticket...just imagine, if you stay down the city center, what you gonna to do for the couples hours and the road to the castle are strictly for horse ride except hotel guest..the distance from city center might take around 10 mins..

but remember, there are no air cond in the room + no kettle + mini toilet +the only hotel bar or restaurant closed 6pm...

room size fine for European standards. The big plus is parking for guest where it is only a 7 minute walk to Neuschwanstein. Breakfast and supper was very good. Staff is young but excellent. Take my advice and book 2 tours thru Neuschwanstein. You have come half way around the world and the tour is fast pace. Two tours allow you to see it all. STAY HERE.

Room Tip: second floor or higher
