“A great find in a quiet location”
Reviewed 6 October 2013

We visited this restaurant on a recommendation of our inn keeper and it turned out to be a perfect lunch location for us. We asked for an authentic Bavarian spot and it turned out to be a great recommendation. The food was good, and they had a very good beer selection. The portions at lunch were quiet generous but the prices were very reasonable. The staff is very helpful, but their English was not as polished as other places we had visited (which, honestly, added to the traditional feel in my opinion).

Many thanks to the staff working that day as I left my hat there and did not realize it until I got back to our hotel. I called the restaurant and they held it for me until I was able to retrieve it.

If you are in the Nymphenburg area and want an authentic Bavarian spot for lunch, dinner or just a beer and a pretzel, this is a great spot for couples or families.

“Pork Lovers Paradise”
Reviewed 4 October 2013

Lucky are those living or staying in Munich's Nymphenburg neighborhood, because they are only steps away from some of most delicious restaurants in the city. Everyone else should get on the Tram to Romanplatz and experience the neighborhood gems just outside of downtown. One of those gems, the Wirtshaus Kurgarten, delivers expertly prepared, authentic German food in a cozy, Old World kitchen setting, full of locals gathering with their friends and families. The menu, available in English, has a nice range of offerings, allowing diners to choose from traditional, stick to your bones, meat and potatoes meals to lighter salads and small plates. The menu included more complex, "special occassion" German dishes, covered in perfectly prepared sauces and dripping with deliciousness.

If you are not afraid of calories, cholesterol, or needing a post-meal nap, order the Munich Pork Loin in Dark Beer Sauce. I promise you will dream about this dish, and likely still be full from it long after your visit to the Wirtshaus Kurgarten. The Nurenburg Sausage Starter is excellent for brunch, the links more breakfast than brat, and served with sauerkraut that would make my German Grandfather proud. The Pork Tenderloin is overshadowed by the decadent kaeserspaetzle (cheesy spatzle), easily the best spatzle we had on our trip. Since returning to the US I have been trying, to no avail, to recreate the mustard vinaigrette served on a side-salad that came with the Swiss Hashbrowns. If the restaurant bottled and sold the salad dressing I would have packed a suitcase worth.

There is a good variety found on the beer and wine menu to suit different tastes. And, unlike many small, family run German restaurants, the Wirtshau Kurgarten takes foreign credit cards!

“Recommended!”
Reviewed 1 July 2013

This is a hidden gem, a lovely neighborhood restaurant near the much larger and better known Hirschgarten around the corner. We went here on the recommendation of the desk person at our hotel nearby, the Kriemhild (also a great place) and were not steered wrong! The seating on the patio and garden area is set among large, leafy trees, and feels secluded. Service is quick and friendly, and the food plentiful and good. Weisswurst is with sweet mustard is a Munich speciality, quite different from Bratwurst (for one thing, it is boiled). I had two for dinner, and they were delicious. However, the hotel desk clerk was horrified because apparently real Münchner eat them for breakfast and in any case, only before noon! The Hirschgarten was also ok, but huge (it seats over 500 people) and hectic. We enjoyed the ambiance at the Kurgarten more.

“Royal treatment!!”
Reviewed 11 May 2013

We happened upon this restaurant by chance, went in and were told there was no seating except for a high table for four near the bar. Why not? We all chose the fresh white asparagus and the weiner schnitzel for our main course and what a choice! As good as any of us had ever had. The beer went down easy and the dessert, Kaiser something or other, was to die for. The waiter and waitresses made the whole experience even more memorable by treating us like four of their local friends. The place was packed and we believe we were the only outsiders. Lovely evening!

“Hidden neighborhood gem”
Reviewed 8 May 2013

We decided to eat here on a recommendation by Sebastian at Hotel Laimer Hof, where we were staying, and loved the place. It is frequented mostly by locals in the neighborhood and the food was outstanding. We both had Wiener Schnitzel, which was beautifully cooked with very generous portions. We decided we had to have a dessert before leaving Munich and chose the Apple Strudel, which was served warm and really good -- true comfort food!
