First thing - make sure you book! This a small, but not tiny, cosy restaurant. There are some tables outside in the courtyard so we enjoyed an aperitif there before being seated for dinner.
The service was outstanding throughout the evening. Also first class was the food: definitely Bavarian but a clear step away from the many touristy restaurants in central Munich.
On this occasion we were a group of 8 business colleagues but I would have no hesitation in recommending this for a smaller group of friends, family or a couple.

We have visited this restaurant several times and have never been disappointed. Our most recent visit, last Saturday night, was with 4 Munich residents. We had booked a table two weeks in advance as the restaurant is small and intimate, and is very popular. The decor is typically Bavarian, comfortable and welcoming. We ordered different dishes - fish, beef goulash, salads - all of which were attractively served with ample portions perfectly cooked. The service was excellent. We will certainly eat there again when we next visit Munich.

I can't rave highly enough about this cozy little traditional Bavarian restaurant in the heart of Munich's old town. When you walk in, you're transported to a little Alpine farmhouse, and the experience only gets better from there. Excellent, attentive and warm service, in a quaint, traditional atmosphere. The food is traditional Bavarian and Austrian, with a very careful attention to gastronomic details, the likes of which is very uncommon. Very delicate and savory tastes with every bite. You can really tell that the chef takes great pride in the food. The establishment was full of Germans the night we were lucky enough to eat there, but for one table of a business dinner where both German and English was spoken. We watched many walk-ins politely turned away, as you really do want to make a reservation at this gem of a spot. The dinner crowd seemed to arrive mostly between 7 and 7:30. Zum Alten Markt is great for couples, families, friends, business, special occasions, or just because you feel like a special meal. I sound like a commercial for this place, but I really just can't speak highly enough about it. A not-to-be-missed treat when you're in or around Munich.

Not a very big restaurant, but the atmosphere was alive and buzzing with mainly local germans having dinner. :)

Really tasty bavarian food, good service and in a convenient location just off the Viktualienmakt.

Will go back again!

Every yera we visit Munchen for the ISPO trade fair (42 years now) and this is the 10th time we have been to Zum Alten Markt. Why? Because it is so good. there are so many restaurants in Munchen that we want to visit but we can not miss a visit to our favorite. Shrimp followed by Kidneys with an assorted desert plate - washed down with TWO bottles of Grunner Veltliner / Riesling. Only 51 weeks to go until nest years show - unless we have a weekend in Munchen during the summer.
