“A safe, decent place to lay your head”
Reviewed 3 March 2014

The Hotel Amba was our lowest point in Munich.

The pros: close to the train station and close to Augustiner (very big pros), good (overpriced) breakfast.

The cons: not exactly clean, not a great value, overpriced breakfast, non-functioning internet, far from the center of town (you must take the S-bahn).

If it seems to be your cheapest option and you want to save a few euros, you can do worse than the Amba, but it does not come recommended.

This hotel is great for anyone wanting to visit Munich and for those travelling from English speaking countries like us from the UK its perfect. Staff are only too happy to help and their ability to speak English (along with most of the other people in Munich) combined with very good knowledge about Munich really help you make the most of exploring this brilliant city. It is right on the Haupbahnhof (Central station) stop off the S/U-bahn which gets you just about anywhere you want to go and we personally couldn't hear anything of the train station across the road. The only negative is the halls are a bit noisey so bring ear plugs if you want a long lie in but if you want to get up and explore its not really an issue because all the noise was after about half 8/9am. Hotel is v clean, everytime we went out and got back it was spotless and the shower is fantastic, I would without any hesitation recommend this hotel, 10 out of 10!

It was just as we needed after a long flight. Clean, and had a good breakfast. The room was small, and so are most of the elevators, but that's the way it is over there.
Christine, and Harry (Front desk) were very nice to us. We'd go again.
Our dates of travel are wrong. But they don't give you much choices.
Just our two cents.

Room Tip: It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's very nice.

Stayed here for one night after flying into Munich on the evening of the 30th January. My son and I stayed here as we were looking for accommodation near train station as we were travelling to Budapest the following morning. A somewhat dated foyer but clean snd functional. Staff friendly and chatty on checkin. Given the key for our very small box room overlooking the road. As my son put it "its cosy mum". Shower was hot, plenty if towels, we slept great despite hearing the odd train. Cannot comment on breakfast as it was not included in price. For what we wanted it was grand. You probably wouldn't come here for a romantic getaway, but close and handy for sightseeing at a cheap price

VERY VERY close to the train station and next to the main road, which is convenient for travel BUT could hear announcements at the train station throughout the night and the sound of cars honking, etc. Staff probably needs a refresher course in customer service. Room was not ready when we arrived and so we decided to wait and looked at where we could go in München as they said the room would be ready in 30 minutes and that they'd call us as soon as the room was ready. Not only did it take more than 30 minutes to get the room ready, they also didn't call us when the room was ready. When we got to the room, we noticed that the room was compact. I gather that the room was a room for 2 people but they added 2 extra beds and labelled it a quadruple room. Also paid for internet that was too slow to work. I guess you get what you pay for.

Booked on sale and therefore was great value. The entire hotel could use a facelift and the staff need a bit of a refresher course in customer service (nothing was explained at check in -in fact the general attitude was that we were massively putting everyone out by checking in at all-, eg the fact that breakfast was not included and was instead priced at 9euro pp was not mentioned). The room itself was good, clean and tidy, the bathroom was relatively new and clean. hotel is in a convenient location. The breakfast is a little steep but good quality for a hostel buffet. Warm rolls, various sliced breads, cold meats and cheeses, good selection of cereals, 3min AND 5min boiled eggs (!!!), sausages, coffee... Overall a good place for a nights rest but not much else.

Hotel Amba is located directly across from Munich's main train terminal and an easy walk to most places of interest. It is an excellent location, but our first view was their outdoor sign and entry and we guessed correctly that Amba could use refurbishment. The lobby is reasonably comfortable but needs to be refreshed. The rooms are small but not tiny like some European hotels. The beds are very firm, and not to our liking. They seem more double rather than queen sized. Generally there is a great deal of noise. We thought it was more likely do to uncarpeted floors and poor sound proofing. Every time someone closed a door it had a startle effect. The breakfasts were quite expensive so we went with the many choices at the train station. The staff was super friendly and always very helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the elevators and staircases where it may be quieter.
