“Sheraton Arabella is now Westin Grand a true 5 star hotel!”
Reviewed 10 July 2009

I was last at the Westin in February and it was then Sheraton Arabella. Now that Westin has taken over the standards have only gone up!

The check-n desk had a madeover and looked alot brighter with more staff which meant faster check-in. The staff have always been helpful and friendly and they still are! The lounge area has also had a made over with a huge projector screen in the middle maybe for sporting games. Overall the takeover has given the hotel a nice makeover which has brightened up the whole appearance!

The rooms are now equipped with personal bathroom amenities, spoons for the tea/coffee making facitlities, iron/iron board and the bed is still very comfortable but now it is made up of Westin signature bedding.

It is about 15 minutes by train from the Arabella station to the city centre of Marienplatz/Karlsplatz. A 3 minute walk will take you to a supermarket with all the goodies and around there are other small shops around that area.

This is a lovely hotel if you don't mind splurging a little!

This was my fourth visit to Minich but the first in the Westin Grand. The hotel is very welcoming, in an excellent location; not in the city centre, but just a few metres away from the end station of the U Bahn (german tube) which convieniently takes you to the heart of the tourist areas of the city in just a few stops. The hotel boasts of an excellent Bavarian speciality restaurant, where sumptuous area specialities are served in a relaxed atmosphere. the staff are also dressed in typical Bavarian attire. Portions are enough to feed the most hungry, and beer is obviously in abundance. Light foods are served in the lobby, good but service may be a bit slow at times. The Asian restauramt is excellent too and breakfast is varied. The hotel is in the up market residential district of Bogenhausen, and as expected is surrounded by high priced restaurants but wow really yummy food. My only issue might be the Executive lounge. Here the staff is very friendly and efficient, but the food is not varied. Just machos (out of a packet) and some nuts. The pastries are delicious but one could place some more of them. The pool is lovely not big but has a kind of waterfall feature which is fun. (make sure to find the well hidden button though) Being a Platinum Starwood guest I was obviously given an upgrade. But I am sure that rooms are all very decent. The concierge will also sell you U Bahn tickets. This avoids handling the automated machines in the station. Not difficult since also in English. I would reccomend both the city and the hotel

Room (17th floor)
- Just refurbished room / floor).
- good standard
- liked the fruits in the evening that had been placed as complimentary service
- my king sized bed was very comfortable. I slept awesome.
- Bath is a good size. Only the shower is a bit tight and could be a bit spacious - though if you feel to cramped in, use the bath tub :)
- elegant dark wood interiour.

Location:
The city is in good reach by Subway and / or Tram, as at the Effnerplatz you have both and are within 15 minutes at the city centre.
Also the English Garden is in close access by walking.
Directly at the B2R (Mittlerer Ring) - thereof a bit noisy if you prefer to sleep with an open window.

Pricewise, I rather go for a club room in the Arabellasheraton (4star) across the street. Nicer view over the city at a reasonable rate; close to the fitness / spa area and a more private breakfast lounge with view over the city.
If you plan on eating out etc. wihtin th ehotel, the Westin does offer more, Paulaner Biergarten, Cafe area etc.
What is great , you usually do not need to park the car in the expensive hotel parking, just use the road in front. The car park is also not to recommend, even with an average sized car it is so compact that you have a high chance of scratching your paintjob.

The hotel itself is very spacious and modern; staff was very friendly. Only the capacity of the breakfast restaurant was to small for the size of the hotel; guests had to queue up and wait for a table. Room service shows some space for improvement.

Stayed at the Arabella Grand from a Saturday to a Tuesday. We were upgraded to a towers room. The room was excellent, very clean, well equipped and we had a good view of the alps (when the fog cleared). The hotel is at the end of the U4 underground line.

Trains run (with changes required) until about 01.30. The trains were very frequent and fast, connections were usually waiting when change were required.

Drinks etc were expensive, but we were expecting that.

The only down side to this hotel was the petty charge for using their own pcs for internet connectivity, totally pointless and uncalled for.

Travellers

this is a business hotel; as such its geared towards the business traveller needs; in Summer - however, its full of guests from the Middle East who stay there for weeks/months with the full family to undergo surgery at one of the very good German private hospitals - this is mainly June - September. It then becomes a more leisurely hotel.

I went there for a business trip and was delighted to find it nicely christmas-like decorated. I really thought they did a good job.

The rooms are standard business rooms you find all over the world, maybe the bathroom is a bit more sizeable, which is good.

The Bar is ok, although not overly spledid; but worth 4* out of 5.

A real highlight is the Restaurant "Ente im Lehel" which serves very good cuisine - might hold a Michelin Star, soon. Not pricey, but definitely worh a visit.

Downstairs, you have a Spa, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, a Bavarian beer garden / Bavarian restaurant called Paulaner; excellent Munich beer served plus the more real food!

Summary -
the Hotel is a bit too big and business like to be a Leisure hotel.
Its not in the City, but a bit (2km) away) which is not a problem.

I recommend it also for those looking for a good deal - you can get very good rates (180euros or so) incl breakfast!
