As others have said, the Platzl enjoys a great location. We stayed for five nights in the Bavaria Suite in July while attending the Munich Opera Festival. The opera house and various other sites are within easy walking distance of the hotel.

Room was very comfortable and consisted of a bedroom and a sitting room. Bathroom had a fairly large shower (no tub). There was absolutely no noise from outside.

Air conditioning worked well and we enjoyed excellent housekeeping.

Staff very helpful; breakfast buffet selection is outstanding with numerous hot and cold items.

Numerous restaurants nearby.

Very highly recommend.

The hotel is so expensive that kind of struggles to deliver the value I demand for such a price.

It really piggybacks on its superb location. Service is what you'd expect when you pay a high price, room size and ammenities surprised me on the low/negative side.

Breakfast is correct, wifi works OK. It has a parking lot beneath it, which I was under the impression that was included in the rate, but I had to fork out €25 for it.

My room was facing the main street and I didn't hear any noise.

My partner Katherine chose the Platzl Hotel after a great deal of research. It was a good choice. When we arrived at Munich Airport, we simply caught the airport train into Marienplatz (the central square in Munich - cost: 10 Euros), and the Platzl Hotel was just around the corner in Sparkassen Strasse ... a level two-minute walk away. The hotel feels very modern and the staff speak English and are very efficient, helpful and friendly. We arrived at 9am (before check-in time), so the staff looked after our bags while we went out to get our bearings in the city nearby. We returned an hour before check-in time, but they had our room ready and waiting. It was a large room on the third floor, with a bath in the ensuite. It was at the back of the hotel, and looked onto the famous Hofbrauhaus Beer Hall. This is normally a crowded part of town, but the double-glazed windows meant we were not disturbed at all by noise. The hotel serves a HUGE all-you-can-eat breakfast, with many food options. It's worth including breakfast when you book, because the coffee shops in Munich open late, and those that serve breakfast are often crowded. So, to get a good start on your day, I recommend breakfast at the Platzl. The hotel also has a dinner restaurant, but we didn't try this, because there are lots of restaurants nearby, and we wanted to try other famous places like the Hofbrauhaus. However, we liked everything about the Platzl. So much so that when we returned to Munich for one night before catching our flight home, we had no hesitation in booking into the Platzl again.
NOTE: There is a Post Office right across the road from the front door of the Platzl Hotel, and it has a great Philatelic Counter with a big selection of German stamps available. So if, like me, you enjoy sending postcards home with carefully-chosen colourful local stamps on them, (rather than the routine basic 0.75 Euro postcard stamp you can buy in shops or hotels), just walk across the road and into the Post Office.
Note 2: The hotel can arrange a taxi for you to travel to or from Munich Airport. However, it costs around 70 Euros. We're interpid, and so we simply caught the S-Bahn train from the airport terminal into Marienplatz. It costs 10 Euros (or $20 Euros for a family of 4). The train is swift and easy, and takes about 20 minutes. The hotel in Sparkassen Stratte (as I said earlier) is just a short walk from Marienplatz and easy to find. If you don't know where to go when the train arrives in Marienplatz, just take the escalator up to street level in the Square, and look for the Tourist Office which is just beside the famous Glockenspiel (clock); it has free city maps.
Note 3: If you are flying into Munich, then catching a train to another destination, you'll need to go to the Main Train Station (Hauptbahnhoff) in Munich. That's a long walk, and its best to get a taxi from right outside the Platzl. The staff can call one for you, and the cost is usually just 15 Euros.

I recently had a business trip in Munich Germany and we stayed at the Platzl Hotel. The location of the hotel is superb, close to the Marienplatz, the center of town and terrific shops. The rooms are cozy, clean and comfortable. the service from the staff is wonderful. The concierge had fantastic dinner recommendations. I will actually come back to this hotel for a vacation, which is a huge complement for a work traveler.

I am really glad that we chose this hotel in Munich. The location in Marienplatz is ideal, the staff are helpful and pleasant, the room had a nice street view and was clean and large and the breakfast was sumptuous. 2 mins walk to Marienplatz with all of the sights, good shopping, great street side food and steins of beer. Good both at night and during the day. Fast, free wifi. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view and high up too.

We stayed from 20 - 22 June in a junior suite on the first floor (reception is floor zero). The nicely appointed room was located in the back of the hotel, thus we did not have any noise issues. This was our second stay at the Platzl and we will stay here again if we return to Munich. The location is superb. The hotel is very clean and the rooms and bed were very comfortable. The staff is friendly. The wifi worked well; breakfast was very good and had many food options. The only reason I rated this stay 4 of 5 stars is because the air conditioning worked only moderately well. We met other guests on higher floors that stated that their rooms were hot. Ours was not hot (it was upon arrival with the AC off), but it wasn't as cool as expected given that the outside temperature was only in the high 70 degrees (F). The room temp was acceptable at night with the windows open. We didn't complain because it was borderline. Other than that, a great stay.

The entire stay was very nice . The famous Hofbrau house was just a very short walk (2 minutes) from the hotel lobby. There are some small cafes and shopping there also. The hotel is old but clean with very helpful staff! Breakfast is very good with a large variety compared to most European hotels. You are located on the edge of the Marienplatz which makes it acessible to all kinds of good things without being in the thick of it.
I would stay here again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
You place great importance on quality and want to be right in the middle of Munich's city life? Then Platzl Hotel Munich and its culinary offerings are the address for you. This traditional four-star Superior Hotel and its two popular restaurants - the Pfistermuhle and Wirtshaus Ayingers - are located in the heart of Munich's old city, right beside the famous Hofbrauhaus. And just a short walk from the Marienplatz, the Bavarian State Opera, Maximilianstrasse and Viktualienmarkt. The Inselkammer family and its team combine Bavarian hospitality and traditional style elements with a modern lifestyle and state-of-the-art technology. It begins with a warm welcome in the foyer, continues through the 167 guest rooms and only ends when you leave Munich through the city's historic quarter. This combination of tradition and modernity also creates the ideal setting for private celebrations such as birthdays or weddings, but also conferences and seminars. Your visit should also include a taste of the culinary offerings at our two restaurants - because gastronomy has a long tradition at the Platzl. As early as the beginning of the last century, the Platzl stage was graced not just by cabaret giants such as Karl Valentin. Good Bavarian food also made repeat appearances, being served to guests before and after the performances. Today, the Pfistermuhle is synonymous with sophisticated Bavarian cuisine - at Munich's only preserved city mill. Since the year 2000, people from Munich and elsewhere have enjoyed the hearty regional dishes at Wirtshaus Ayingers, which is next door, while the charming stores and eateries in the "Platzlgassen" add to the lively atmosphere in the Platzl. Our outside bar the Platzl Karree presents a unique bar concept in Munich's old town. Because of the stylish and yet down-to-earth design the fine balancing act between tradition and modernity with the Platzl Karree is perfectly realized. The dominating colors anthracite with burgundy and the dark parquet flooring create a bar to relax and enjoy. In the new Josefa Bar & Kaffee we serve locally produced unique spirits, cool beverages with herbs freshly from the Viktualien market and own cocktail creations. ... more   less
