“Charming”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2011

I keep booking a room at the Mariandl (at least in summertime; in winter, the antique heater/furnaces are not that efficient in some rooms). Great location, close to subway, close to Sendlinger Tor, great trees around, nice rooms with antique charme, grand cafe (with outstanding beer and mix drinks and cakes) and outside seating to leisurely drink and eat, almost like a beer garden (with full food assortment, however). Often live chamber music in the evenings (classical, romantic, jazz). Restaurant guests are mostly students and layed back folks, also business now and then, basically from all walks of life. Hotel reception a bit special, stairways really old, no elevators. Rooms are nicely renovated with classical english appliances, furnitures charmingly old. Spartanic seems to be the tenet. Breakfast offers what's needed, the room unfortunately not in the grand cafe, but adjacent. In summertime breakfast can be taken on the terrace.

We stayed 3 nights in Mariandl for Oktoberfest 2009. The close location to the fair grounds was perfect. Not a bad walk to Marienplatz or other Munich sites either. As several have mentioned, Cafe am Beethovenplatz on the first level does get a bit noisy - if you are hoping for a silent night, this may not be the spot for you. We loved the decor and feel of the hotel though and will be staying there again this fall!

We´ve been in the Mariandl for 3 nights. We had the cheapest category which means bathroom outside and to share with some other rooms. We´ve been on the 1st floor.
Good to me is that its clean and I like the style- its not like in every hotel. Interieur is kind of baroque style. The room is quite simply furnished, no TV, a sink, a wardrobe, 2 chair, a table, a phone. But with elegance.
Not good to me is that you can hear everything from the corridor and from the room next door. When someone is entering or leaving the corridor (its closed witha door) the door is super loud. Horrible. It would be not a problem of course if there are people who care but we had some musicians next to us and they came home late and didn´t realise that they are not alone in the house....
But I have to say for the price its really OK...next time I would for sure though take one or 2 categories higher since these rooms are also on the 2nd and 3rd floor- with bathroom for ourselves.

Breakfast is in a very charming room - breakfast itself wouldn´t win a price because its just more than normal ...don´t expect too much.

The house itself is as already mentioned extraordinary charming and special.

We've stayed at the Mariandl four times over the last six years, and it's always been magical. The hotel is in mock-Biedermeier style with touches of modern art, and its three floors sit above the Cafe am Beethovenplatz, which has hardly changed in a century (except to get more laid back), has atmosphere you could cut with a knife, great food and drink, and live music every night, from Beethoven piano sonatas to modern jazz. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms are spotlessly clean, with very comfortable beds. It's only ten minutes' walk from the mail rail station, but is very quiet. Not a place to go if you want TV, phones, all the trimmings, but highly recommended if you want a unique experience full of character. Warning--there's no lift!

I stayed here for the middle weekend of Oktoberfest this year as part of a large group and we were all very pleased with the hotel. The rooms leave a little something to be desired (there was a bath tub in the middle of the 6-person room) and our bathroom had some shower drainage issues, but if you're looking for no frills accomodations in Munich then this is a really fun spot. The breakfast is included (pretty standard, great coffee) and there's a small "beer garden" next to the hotel. But the best part about the hotel though is the bar downstairs, it is AWESOME! Met tons of great people and they hired a fantastic band for the Saturday night that we stayed there.

You can't beat the location of this hotel, especially if you are planning on attending Oktoberfest or anything on the fairgrounds. If you are looking for top of the line accommodations, this place is not for you. The staff was very friendly. The building and rooms are clean but old. We had a room with a "shared" bathroom but it seemed that we didn't actually share it with anyone since the wc and shower were labeled for use by each room. I have stayed in Munich for Oktoberfest before and had to stay a good distance away from downtown for the price I paid. If you're looking for a good deal and don't mind staying in an older more "charming" place than this is for you. Breakfast is included. No elevator. I would suggest trying to get a room on the 2nd (3rd floor in the EU) or higher because the cafe can be loud at night.
