“A wonderful museum”
Reviewed 24 May 2012

The Villa Stuck is such an interesting museum. The historic rooms are fascinating in their detail and preservation. The paintings by Franz von Stuck are haunting in their beauty and it is powerful to see them hanging in the rooms where he lived. The modern gallery addition is perfect for showing other artwork. The gallery space is an impressively laid out three story structure, with a beautiful sprial staircase linking the three floors. There is a good book store and a nice cafe.

“Not my kind of Jugendstil”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

I'm a fan of Art Nouveau and related styles of the same period in other countries (Spanish Modernista, English Arts & Crafts and German Jugendstil). However, the type of this artist Franz von Stuck I felt was pretentious and pompous. The villa looked like this Roman building, the salon was overworked and dark, his paintings were of an overdone Renaissance meets Rococco kind with lots of naked men and the artist was married (jaja). But the real downside is that you can only visit about 3 rooms. The hallway and the little art shop were even more interesting. The entrance fee was 6 euros, but rather disappointing for what one can get to see.

They often have interesting exhibitions, and their cafe in the courtyard is good too.

“Wonderful if you are interested in art nouveau or symbolist art”
Reviewed 9 October 2007

Fabulous small museum, a significant portion of which is the restored public rooms of Franz von Stuck's home with many of his paintings in their original context, including a version of the well-known "Sin". The remainder is given over to special exhibitions, both art nouveau and modern art. Well worth a special visit, if you are a fan of this period. Their are some other wonderful art nouveau buildings in the area as well.
