We stayed at Hotel am Viktualienmarkt for 2 nights in early June 2013. The hotel's location is ideal: easy to get to from the airport (S1 or S8 train to the Marienplatz stop), nice/quiet neighborhood, & a very short walk to the main market (2 min north), the central square (5 min north), & the Deutches Museum (15 min south). Our court-side room was simple, clean & bright. It was a tad small (not surprising since it was so close to the center), but was quiet & comfortable. The bathroom was large & modern. The bed, a very high density foam, was firm & extremely comfortable. The buffet bkfst was served in a pleasant space on the ground level (it felt like a street level city restaurant) & was good, as well as abundant. All of the staff were very pleasant & friendly. On our 1st night, the lady who checked us in directed us away from the hofbrauhaus for dinner (touristy & expensive), & toward a smallish neighborhood restaurant which we loved (all locals, except for us). After some point in the evening (I think 9PM), you must let yourself into the hotel with a building key since the staff departs around that time. Not a problem unless you lose the key or arrive after 9PM on the 1st night (in the latter case they evidently make some sort of arrangement for you). Munich was a lot of fun, even though it rained the entire time we were there. When we return we'll definitely stay at this hotel.
