INNSIDE by Melia Muenchen Parkstadt Schwabing
Ranked #75 of 385 Hotels in Munich
Reviewed 2 July 2012

The Innside is a Melia hotel (known for their Latin American properties) should you happen to be familiar with this "chain". It is a high-end, stylish, contemporary property that is nested within an office park. While that contributes to the property's quietness it does have negatives, namely services within walking distance from the hotel. There are no restaurants or attractions surrounding the property. Think if the area as a suburban office park and you will understand what the area is like.

The U-Bahn (U6 I believe) is a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel and you will be in Marktplatz or Odeonplatz in 5 stops or so @ 4.10 Euro each way. So, late nights out in Munich is a slight chore b/c of that walk back to the hotel from the station after the train ride.

So much for the location. The rooms are modern and clean. Even #s face south so be warned - it gets very hot as a result. They have louvers/shutters to help deflect the sun but the room heats up quickly. The AC is not like in the U.S. - they are very slow and weak. And, they only work when you insert your room key into a slot when inside the room. TIP - get 2+ keys so that you can leave the room and keep one key in the slot to keep the AC on. It took a half day just to get the room temp down to an acceptable level and even then I had to sleep on top of the comforter since the room was still warm.

The bathroom is a modern one. The clear glass shower stall is strange. If you are in the room with people who you wouldn't want to see you naked or with those who don't want to see you naked this may be an issue. The toilet space is adjacent to the shower so you can't overlook the shower if someone is using it. To enter/exit the room you pass by the shower stall and so can easily see the person using it. As for the shower itself, it is an enclosed tub with a hand-held shower wand. The step up into the tub from the bathroom is easily 2' - not an easy climb if you are short or elderly or someone with balance issues. Getting out of the shower is even more difficult since your feet are wet, so be careful.

The hotel has a restaurant which I did not use since I spent my time in Munich. The front desk staff - excellent, very accommodating and friendly, a pleasure to deal with. The maintenance guy - scoffed when I questioned the AC effectiveness, said that it was on full blast (full blast for Germany perhaps, but when the AC takes 8 hours to drop the temperature by a few degrees it isn't up to the job IMO), but otherwise was polite and timely after my "complaint".

Internet access is free but only via a Cat5 cable, otherwise they charge you to access it via WiFi. They do offer you a cable to use (who carries Cat5 cables anymore?) so that was convenient, though you can't use your computer away from the desk b/c of the cable connection.

Overall - very nicely styled hotel with friendly and professional staff in a quiet setting that will take you 20-30 minutes to get into the heart of Munich. Ask for an odd-numbered room to avoid the excessive heat and for an extra key to keep the AC running when you are out and you'll be fine.

Room Tip: Choose an odd-numbered room! Even-numbered rooms face the sun all day and heat up quickly and do no...

Good Hotel for business travelers if your office is around the Schwabing Area. Not a lot of places to eat around so be prepared to have the lunch and dinner in the hotel itself. Please also be advised the Wi-Fi is not free, you only have wired internet in the hotel which is a big pain. If you have a tablet/ipad you are out of luck and would need the expensive internet pack from Telekom.

The breakfast is excellent and is the highlight of the stay!! The rooms are spacious and ultra modern.

Air conditioning is a bit of hit or miss though. The Norfriedhof underground station is a 600 meter walk from the hotel which can take you to most places of interest.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get a room which is both overlooking the highway and in the lower floors as...

The hotel has a subway station 10 minutes away by foot. The facilities are quite fine. Free internet is provided by cable. For wireless,a daily fee needs to be paid.

The restaurant is quite fine, but the menu needs a bit more of variety. It only opens for breakfast and dinner. That's a problem if you are around for lunch, since there are not many restaurants nearby.

Friendly and helpful staff!!

5 of us stayed on business and overall comment: weird. It is very stark and minimal, we decided it was overdesigned to the point of being unwelcoming. Reception really looked like an office entrance for an office that doesn't want visitors!
Rooms overall beige and grey with a splash of colour behind the bed with a fuzzy picture. This, with the open plan bathroom arrangement - two ways in to a small cube but neither with a door, had so much frosted glass we felt disoriented! the fuzzy picture behind the bed added to disorientation, I began to wonder whether I had my contact lenses in or not! Whether this is to your taste is a personal matter, our German colleagues who stay there love it so maybe it just seems weird to the British sense of style.
It just didn't quite hang together for me, there was a chair that was placed at 90 degrees to window but faced a blank wall - why not put it at an angle and face the TV?! the mirror was in the bathroom opposite the sink, so you couldn't stand back to get a good view. Soap was in a dispenser rather than a bar, several colleagues never found it. Design statements, but not quite functional.
More important than decor though is sleep. It was too hot and however much I tried to turn the system down or off it still blew warm. The windows are floor to ceiling, the blinds do not cut out all light and the curtains are not blackout, being pretty design gauze (beigey grey of course), so I was woken up by light. My colleague was woken up additionally by noise as her room faced onto the main road.
We were on the first floor (there are 5), you could wait a long time for lifts and stairs were difficult to find (I now know that Treppenhaus means stairs) but there was no indication at all on the ground floor as to where the stairs were. You could wait a long time for a lift. Annoyingly, the toilets servicing the breakfast area and the bar are in the basement and there are no stairs down - so you have to wait for the lift.
Breakfast was excellent!
Location - middle of nowhere.
Checkin - inconsistent. Some colleagues given a cable to use internet, others not (and signed up for 4 euros for half an hour of wifi).

Room Tip: go for one high up and not facing the main road. also ensure you're given a LAN cable when you...

Stayed 3 nights at this hotel on a business trip that took place in May 2012.
Hotel is very modern and comfortable although it is located in a business area which means there is nothing to do at a walkable distance. Hotel is located 4,5 km North of the city center and 1,5 km West of Englisher Garden (at more or less half of it’s length) and 500 m from the Nordfriedhof subway station (U6 – blue subway line). From this subway station it is 6 stations away from Marienplatz (city center). To get around we used subway during the day and taxi at night.
On the top floor of the hotel there is a small gym with a couple of exercising machines and a sauna.
Breakfast at hotel was pretty good with the normal food you can find at this type of hotels: fruits, milk, variety of breads, ham, cheese, cereals. I especially enjoyed the fact you can make your own freshly squeezed orange juice and that they have espresso coffee (ask for double). Service is pretty friendly.
Room is modern. One of the walls is a window facing outside (i was facing North), which means you have to close the shutters while getting dressed or you could be seen from outside by everybody driving along the freeway. Bed only has a blanket that is used as bed sheet + blanket (modern stuff !). Room has a flat screen TV with mainly German channels and a couple of others, for example: TVE, BBC, CNN. Mini bar is free but only has 2 bottles of water + 2 soda drink’s.
Bathroom is openly connected to the bed room which means you can basically take a shower and look outside through the room window.
Since we were travelling within a group of 9 people Michael from the front desk was great with his dinner suggestions (excellent choices) and helped us by calling and reserving for the group and arranging for our transportation. Other staff was also very friendly.
Also check reception for special subway ticket prices. You could get special tickets here.

Room Tip: High floor if you like the views

This hotel is well located, not too far from the airport, and not completely into Munich city - directly on the Schwabing exit of the A9 - excellent to avoid heavy traffic!
The decoration of the rooms is very simple but modern and highly practical. Large windows, wide bathroom (at least in the Lifestyle suite!) and plenty of spaces to store clothes, luggage, etc... without invading the living/sleeping area.
Only weird thing is the breakfast room turned into a lounge bar in the evening. The drink menu is is excellent, but it is indeed strange to sip a cocktail while facing the toaster!

On balance this is a functional but good hotel. Bright in the rooms, well positioned but the beds could have been a bit more comfortable. Lack of wifi wasn't ideal but LAN connection worked well. Breakfast and dinner were good and the design is also nice.
