MEININGER Hotel Munich City Center

I've just returned from this great City and couldn't have asked for a better hotel/hostel in which to stay at.

The hostel also has a late night bar open for anyone returning in the early hours.

Rooms are standard but clean and perfect for a group booking.

Close to beer gardens and a fantastic beer hall opposite the hostel made for a great time.

Bayern fans love this place and welcomed us all with open arms.

Stayed for a couple of nights over the weekend of fruhlingfest. Very good value for money. Rooms were very clean and had a good bathroom. Would advise trying to get a room on the higher levels then you are further away from the noise of the lobby when people are getting back. If you are just looking at getting ur head down for a couple of nights and dont want to break the bank then perfect place to stay in munich. If you have bags best to get off at hackerbrucke station as slightly closer than central station. Good brewery across the road and a restaurant called Bavaria slightly further down. Marienplatz where all the main bars are is a 20 min walk but taxi is only 10 euros

Stayed here for a stag do. Very good value for money and excellent location in terms of trains and city centre. Loads of people stay here from across the world and its a good mixed bag of people. Rooms are on the small side but then again the rates are cheap. Hotel feels clean and the service at the desk is decent.

Only downside for me was lack of plugs/awkward plug locations in the rooms and no place to hang clothes.

A clean, basic hotel with no frills. Sadly we were on the first room on the first floor so heard seemingly every other guest arrived back late at night, with plenty of door-slamming and voices to keep us awake. If you're going to Munich for late night activities then maybe that doesn't matter to you though! We didn't have breakfast as we left early. The strength of this hotel is the knowledge and helpfulness of the staff. Another review said they didn't provide towels; we had towels provided in the room.

Room Tip: Ask for the far end of the corridors!

Clean, comfortable hostel. Good breakfast. Parking. Internet. Professional and helpful staff. Only one minus- you should have your own towel (there was no towels in our room).

I have stayed in this hostel several times and would like to sum up my experiences

The dorms:
The dorm experience depends very strongly on your bedfellows..if you have a guy above you that has wind... tough luck. If someone checks in at 3 am... tough luck... The beds are comfortable though (at least if you're no taller than 6 ft - otherwise you'll have problems with the wooden board on the footend). Surprisingly even the pillows are good quality. One has to make up one's own bed. Lockers are available and you can borrow a lock for a deposit of 5 Euros, same goes with the towels.
As far as I am concerned I would always book the cheaper, bigger dorms because how well you sleep won't depend on how many people are in the room but what kind of people... The dorms are fairly clean and 6 people share one shower and toilet.

The single rooms
The rooms are absolutely tiny and the decoration is spartanic to say the least. Think cheap IKEA furniture, linoleum floor, no decoration, you'll get the picture. At this point I find that the hotel disappoints.. One could decorate these rooms with a bit of love and care without causing a cost explosion.... They are not hotel rooms but single hostel rooms though...do keep that in mind, than you won't be disappointed.

Wifi
There is free wifi in the lobby or you can have wifi in your room for a 5 Euros extra charge

Eating
They offer a breakfast for 4,50 which isn't a lot but frankly after my first visit I wasn't even willing to pay that... All you get is jam, obviously chocolate spread for the children, industrial cheese and sausage. Given that most of the customers are from the UK, US or other anglo saxon countries I found that disappointing. It is possible to make some scrambled eggs and sausages for that price. Worst was the fruit: fruit "cocktail" out of the can dripping in sugar. Why not put some fresh apples or seasonal vegetables on the buffet? The bread rolls are ok, so is the coffee.

The better option in my view: Few people know there is a kitchen on the first floor where you can do your own cooking. Just go to the nearby LIDL discount store in the central bus station the other side of Hackerbrücke and do some groceries shopping when you get there. Make sure you bring a marker to be able to put your room number, name and departure date on anything you leave in the fridge or it will be cleared out. You might want to buy a sponge and dish washing liquid as this is not provided regularly and the other guests then leave you with no dishes other than their dirty ones...

Eating out nearby
Just opposite is the fantastic Augustiner Bräu restaurant inside the Augustiner brewery which offers typical bavarian food for relatively very little money.

Housekeeping
The housekeeping is not well managed. Like most hotels they have outsourced that division but unlike others don't have a professional housekeeper to supervise the staff. Sometimes you'll find no towels in the single rooms, sometimes the corridors will be blocked with dirty laundry piled up by the cleaners into dangerous mountains blocking fire escape routes and looking just ugly. If you take a look at the bathroom you realize that it's not that well cleaned either, you can find body hair, dried water spots etc...They do have some cheap shower gel in the single rooms but that's all their is in hygiene products ...but again.. treat it as a hostel - not a hotel - and that's ok.

Front Office
The FO staff is very nice but sometimes a bit overwhelmed with their task. It seems that some of them lack training in their software which makes for unnecessary long queues. The also lack a traditional hospitality training which shines through in the attitude sometimes.

Luggage Room
There is a luggage room but it is shockingly managed. They just give you the key and let you go there by yourself, on your own. At the entrance there is a disclaimer saying they're not liable for anything but in my legal view if you just give anyone a key and let them go in their alone this is so grossely negligent that this disclaimer should be legally void. They ought to give people a number for their suitcase and bring the stuff in their themselves for safety.

Rates
In a totally crazy way the rates in this place are not fixed by the front office but by the headquarters in Berlin. However that office should really get a reality check. At one time they offered a dorm bed for 70 Euros and so on... this the same day where you can find a single room for less in hotels around the corner. I am a hotel professional myself. First of all yes - rates go up when the hotels in the area are busy. But they should never go higher up than what you can decently ask in exchange for the class of service you provide. This is a simple hostel that sometimes extorts four star hotel money from their customers seeking a bed for the night. If they go up - they shouldn't go up in a completely irrational manner either. It is irrational for me if there is no check being done whatsoever what the hotels in the vicinity charge that night...

We stayed here for Oktobetfest 2011. There were 4 of us so we booked a 4 bed dorm which was really clean with our own shower and toilet. It was more like a cheap hotel then a hostel. There is only one lift which is really slow and there is a bit of road noise which didn't worry us too much cos we were really drunk every night from Oktobetfest. Great location for Oktoberfest, with beer halls about a 10-15 min walk when sober. Just remember to book in early for better rates. Free WiFi only downstairs. Will definitely stay here again for Oktobefest.
