We tried here during Oktoberfest having failed to get into many places n the city on the Saturday night. Given the name perhaps we shouldn't have been surprised that they don't serve beer however the wine and service was excellent. The food was merely ok - I had the pork belly with potato salad which was fine. Friends had the cheese and bacon flammenkuchen which was large but a bit bland.

I visit Munich yearly and cannot leave without at least one stop here. The food is good (and German) but the wine list is staggering. There is something from virtually every wine region in the country and a wide variety of prices too. But, as a single traveler and lover of all wines German, this is heaven! To me the best part of any visit here is the opportunity to have your own mega-wineprobe (tasting) by ordering the small glass that way you can sample as many of the wines as you can handle! Oh, JOY!

Walk through the somewhat austere building doors into a beautifully painted interior courtyard. Take a seat and have a glass of very good authentic German wine from the Weinstrasse in the heart of beer country:)

The Pfalzer Reisdenz Weinstube is a very pleasant place to stop after some hectic sightseeing in Munich for a number of reasons. First, in Munich, the World Capitol of Beer, it's actually a weinstube, a restaurant that specializes in wines from the Pfalz Region of western Germany, or more appropriately, a wine bar that does serve food. Second, its actually part of the Munich Residenz, the royal palace of the Wittlesbach Dynasty in the heart of Munich.

There were three of us and we split two bottles of wine. Although many Americans think of German wine as sweet or semi-sweet (and there plenty of it), the best German wine, in my opinion, is Dry Riesling or Riesling Trocken. Also, if the designation is Kabinett mit Pradikat, it means its made from special local grapes, which is better than your run of the mill wine. The wine list was decent and the Rieslings were excellent. The clientele are generally middle class Germans who are very much into enjoying their wine and eating. The patrons were very friendly and social and the waiters were efficient.

We also ordered cheese, hame and bread, which was perfect with the wine.

Like much in Munich, the location is historic, right next to the Residenz (palace) and across from the Feldernhalle, the place where the Beer Hall Putsch was put down by the police, and which later became somewhat of a shrine to the Nazis. But not any more. Now its just a very nice place to grab a glass or bottle (bottle is better) of good wine and a light meal.

Located near the Residence and opposite the Theatiner Church, this is a charming place well worth visiting and revisiting.Good wines by the glass and the bottle, and typically Bavarian food. My wife had a vegetarian noodle dish; I had the Geschnetzeltes, strips of pork on rice with some veg. The prices were more than reasonable. The service was a bit slow, but hey, nothing is perfect.
