“Not up to standard for the price”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Le Meridien Grand Hotel Nurnberg is not good value if you compare it with other hotels. We had just come from the Frankfurter Hof in Frankfurt so comparisons were inevitable; and while every hotel is different, we just did not feel that the Grand Hotel came up to standard. We had a junior suite, which was one room with a sitting area (fully disclosed on the website so no surprises there); but for a similar size room, we paid less at the 5 star Frankfurter Hof than at the Grand Hotel. The room was OK, the bathroom nothing special; turndown service consisted of closing the curtains (nothing else, so why bother?) The restaurant service was disappointing, the food reasonable but far better places to eat. The breakfast was the usual Le Meridien standard fare, quite adequate, and the breakfast staff were good. Probably the best feature was the staff at the front desk; always happy and ready to give you a greeting. The hotel is well located, especially if you want to be close the Main railway station, it is directly across the road; and this is a nice area of Nurnberg, unlike the railway areas of some cities. You can walk to the main sights in 15 to 20 minutes, or take the U-Bahn, just one stop. Also close to the tram stop. All in all, we were a bit disappointed with the hotel, but did enjoy the location and Nurnberg is a surprisingly interesting City to visit.

Dear FunTimes030
thnak you for your review. First of all my apologies that we did not meet all of your expectations, but the hotel is nearly 120 years old and partly listed, so we are not able to make a lot of changes to the physical layout of the building. Normally the turn down includes more than just closing the curtains, again I want to apologize that this did not happen during your stay and be rest assured that I have spoken to my Housekeeping Manager already that a similar situation does not reoccur. Thank you for the praise you have given to our Front Office associates, I have passed them on already and they are all happy to read such comments.
My team and I hope that you will stay with us again in the future and I hope that you come during a time where is not so much pressure on the city to offer lower rates.
Yours sincerely

Location: Right across the Nurnberg Hbf, with the 4 carriage lane road and tram way, one has to use the underpass from the Main train station then cross the second part of the road to reach the main entrance of the hotel. Hotel is close to museum, and the old town and tram stop. very convenient without transport transfer after arriving the Hbf.by train.

Service: The staff at the front desk reception could have been more warm and amicable.
On the day of our check out, we had waited for more than 10mins for the elevator,
not until the housekeeping staff told us it is out of order but there was no sign
inidication.

Room:
We had a very spacious room on the 4th floor facing the train station and main road, traffic noise was not serious at all. Our room has a large sitting area, a cupboard with the TV divided the bed and the sitting area. Given it is an old building. Very limited wall socket for our electronic gadgets. Be sure to call to request Hotwater kettle and mugs. Internet is expensive.

Bath room is spacious but with very little counter space, as other poster stated only with a movable trolley. Towel warmer is good for spring weather.
We have spacious closet with shelves and closet space plus iron & board. Overall the room is tired.

Restaurant: we didn't have breakfast there but we had dinner at the Brasserie.
Our young female server was excellent, the food is average, especially the veal was almost cold in a clear broth.

Location is what we take into consideration.

Dear yrtx4e
thank you for your review and the comments about location, service, room, bathroom and the restaurant. It is nice to read that you quote the location as very convennient right next to the main train station. Normally our Front Office agents are being praised by everybody and I want to apologize if that was not the case with your stay and you are right, a sign that the elevator is out of order should have been displayed. My team and I still hope that you will stay with us again once you are in town and remain,
Yours sincerely

We were with a larger Group and i speak not only for myself but in parts for a lot of other travellers .
The Hotel is very convenient in the City and next to the old City which is wonderful and only a minute from the hotel. Reception and staff were friendly and the car was parked by the valet somewhere across the road in a safe carpark.
Myself and others were disappointed in the bathrooms which are a good size but not designed by someone who travel a lot. Only one electrical plug, not storage except one little trolley in an unlit corner, one mirror and Shower in the bathtub (which is normal for European Hotels). The Layout of the bathroom could certainly be improved since it fairly large.
Lots of the other travellers found that the air-condition did not work properly and we try to sleep with the windows open. It does get very noisy in the morning when the first tram is passing.
Have told reception that if i eat at McDonalds i get free internet when i eat a burger and here you pay 250 Euro and you get twelve hours for 19 Euro. The reception was very sorry about it and gave us a free voucher for 12 hrs.
A nice place but for the money I know i can do better

Dear hansweitmann
thank you for your review. The hotel is over 120 years old and all rooms vary in size and shape. Once the next big renovation is comming up, we will make sure that we will pay a lot of attention to the bathroom design and create more space. You are right in saying that we charge for internet access in the rooms, but we do offer it free of charge in the Lobby and in our business centre.
My team and I still hope that you will stay with us again once in town and remain

Good hardware, nice renovated rooms. Very average reception team, Breakfast did not live up to expectation, refill was slow, quality not as it is expected from their stated standing.

Anyhow, this is quite not the issue with this place, the real problem is noise, we had the great chance to have taken 2 rooms on the 5th floor next to a family with a small child. The facts: The corridors were resonating of the steps and the doors that shut down heavily, there is NO sound isolation from the room doors to corridors.... My daughter could no sleep before 400 am and we were woken up at 730 in the morning -after a night sharing the crying of the neighbors kid -by a worker who was hammering a door for repair (seriously !!).

Now based on this we decided not to spend a second night there as ... yes ... we do pay hotel rooms to actually sleep.

Now all of this can just happen with renovation focussing more on rehabilitating the look of the ancient gloire of the place without the use of modern sound isolation technique (they had to save money somewhere I guess) BUT what is really borderline is that I was at first requested by the reception to pay for the original booking period what I obviously refused. At this point the manager at the reception in charge even he was there and in front refused to discuss (just ignoring me!!!) and left the weight of this really annoying situation to an employee that only could help himself by getting the GM involved. At the very end we left by paying full price for one night of not even half sleep whilst "generously" we didn't had to pay for the rest of the reservation period.

So all in all: A nicely renovated hotel for the eye and not quite for the ear, a quite OK bar, average Breakfast, nice service everywhere but avoid the reception. A and yes, quite well located.

As with all Le Meridien hotels that I've stayed at, the service was excellent. The common spaces in the hotel are beautiful, and the location of this hotel is excellent. It is just southeast of the Konigstrasse, which is a prime walking and tourist route.

Our room was modern but a bit small -- ultimately, though, I think that's my fault because of the particular room that I booked, so I can't really complain. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the interior courtyard so that you can avoid excess train station noise.

Very nice hotel, with a great location. We did not eat at the breakfast buffet--expensive if not included in your room package. But, we had both coffees and drinks at the hotel bar; the staff was helpful and friendly.

The room had an American style bed and top sheet, instead of just a duvet as most German hotels. Our room was very small, but overlooked Old Town. The windows sufficiently kept the noise out. We would stay here again.
