Criteria:
• Facilities: Basic
• Bathroom: Good - Very clean, a little small but definitely served it’s purpose
• Room: Good - Was big in size, well heated and clean
• Breakfast: Good – good range lovely breakfast room in the schnitzeleria
• Internet: Free wifi, good signal
• Location: Excellent, very close to a range of great restaurants and only 15 minute walk to the train station through the beautiful little old town. This is definitely not in the seedy end of town.
• Cleanliness: Excellent
• Service: Very Good
• Security: Reception unavailable from 11pm, however was quite safe still
Summary: A lovely old building to stay in! Definitely worthy of being the Lonely Planet pick for Nuremberg. We highly recommend dinner in the restaurant under the hotel. But bookings are essential; it fills up very quickly!

My husband and I stayed 2 nights in Nuremberg to visit the Christkindlmarkt. We chose Hotel Elch based upon its location and the history of the building/hotel itself!

The hotel is perfectly situated 5 minute walk from the markets, the Kaiserburg, Albrecht Durer's house and other sites.

There is no lift so if that bothers you, then its not the right hotel for you. We had heavy winter suitcases but between the two of us, climbing the stairs was not an issue. The room was immaculately clean, the bathroom was small but again very clean and the wifi was ok.
The schnitzel restaurant downstairs had awesome food at very reasonable prices and the buffet breakfast was fresh with lots of variety (cereal, fruit, cheese, breads, yoghurts).
The staff were lovely and looked after our bags for us as we arrived early. They also gave us a map with other recommendations of places to eat and visit.

We walked from the Hauptbahnhof and that was around 10 minutes. The streets are cobbled which makes the wheel bags a bit of fun to pull along :-)

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the street

My teenage daughter and I travelled to Nuremberg to visit the Christkindlmarkt. We really enjoyed our one-night stay at Hotel Elch. Firstly, the hotel let us check in early, particularly as my daughter wasn't feeling very well. Secondly, the staff were extremely friendly and even more so when heard an English woman speaking German! The hotel is ideally located within the walls of the Old City, and was about a 5 minute walk from the Christkindlmarkt. The room was warm and comfortable, with 2 twin beds pushed together (we requested twin beds), although the decor was a little dated. Perhaps the only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the bathroom could have been better. The shower doors didn't shut properly, so a lot of water went onto the bathroom floor. The bathroom was also quite small, but that's independent European hotels for you. The shower itself was hot and powerful. Everything was spotlessly clean. We were very impressed with the breakfast - with hot and cold options available. You will never starve at breakfast in a decent German hotel! We particularly like sitting in the elevated booth opposite the breakfast area, which was quite cosy. We loved the wooden beams and the moose theme running through the restaurant and the hotel. The only downside was that the hotel's Schnitzelria is closed on Monday evening, and we were looking forward to it, but the hotel staff directed us to a couple of nearby Kellers where we could indulge that. Another plus was the free Wifi in the hotel, which was very handy for teenagers and adults alike. Overall, a really good experience and if we find ourselves back in Nuremberg again, we'll be back at Hotel Elch without a doubt.

On a separate note, we decided to take a taxi from the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) directly to the hotel. It took about 10-15 minutes and cost around Euro 8.50, which was worth doing with luggage and being tired after an early morning flight. There is a taxi rank just around the corner from the hotel too, which we used to catch a taxi back to the Hauptbahnhof, again at a similar price. Its very easy to get to and from the Airport (Flughafen) using the U-Bahn. Its on line U2. Tickets can be bought from machines, and you press the English language option for instructions. Just select the first option for tickets, which is Nuremberg and surrounding areas. Tickets are Euro 2.50 each one way, and don't forget to stamp them in the stamping machines at the top of the escalator or stairs before getting on the U-Bahn. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Another tip is to buy food in the Hauptbahnhof rather than have something to eat at the airport. We had a slab of pizza each for 2 Euros, which was boxed up for us to take on our journey.

Our first night on our "Christmas Market" tour of Germany and Austria was spent at the Elch Hotel inside the old, walled city. We walked everywhere from there, except for the Nazi Documentation Center, which was a short tram ride away. Our room was on the highest floor, and there was no elevator, in preserving the historical nature of the hotel. That did not bother us, but I know some folks would need a lift. The bed was comfortable, and the room nicely appointed as well as being quiet. We had a great shower and small bathroom in our room. The breakfast was fantastic, with eggs, bacon, meats, cheeses, breads, yogurt, etc. We only had to pick up a small lunch at the Christmas Market. The hotel is housed in a 500 year old, timbered building. We loved it.

Room Tip: If you can't walk the stairs with your suitcase, as for a lower floor.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Elch on the basis of other Trip Advisor reviewers and we were pleased. It is a small older place with the atmosphere we sought, historic Germany. Our room was big enough to move around easily, had everything we needed, and a modern bathroom - though small it had enough shelves for our things. The shower had a soap/shampoo dispenser and there was a hairdryer. Nice view from 2nd floor of cobbled streets and old buildings. Breakfast was substantial, including a plate of caprese salad (tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, balsamic dressing) a nice touch. Great German breads! We walked about 5 minutes to the Albrecht Durer museum and the castle. We were minutes from the market square which was delightful as the Christmas market was setting up. The staff was friendly, Casy speaks English, and she helped us plan our visit with a map and directions for bus and rail car.
