This place makes chocolates of all kinds and they also serve good food and good cakes. There are a few of these cafe's to be found all across passau. The chocolates are certainly worth it, not bad at all. If you want more about chocolate I'd suggest the Flemmish chocolate house in the Grabengasse though. But for a nice snack, a drink or a cup of coffee Simon is a nice place. It can be crowded though, and not only by tourists.

Passau is a charming border town between Germany and Austria on the confluence of three rivers - the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz. The Christmas market provided the festive atmosphere but the highlight of the visit was sampling the hot chocolate in Cafe Simon. The pastries and gingerbread were absolutely delicious and it was impossible to leave without purchasing some of the tempting plates of cakes and biscuits to bring home for the family to enjoy.

As part of a Vantage Christmas Market cruise on the Danube we visited passue and had the pleasure of seeing a "Lebkuchen" baking demonstration, which was excellent. The restaurant and bakery is a 4th generation establishment with son and father still being there. It also has one of the finest selection of specialy cakes and is not to be missed when travelling to Passau.

While in Passau for a couple of days I was fortunate enough to take a walk over to Cafe Simon near St. Stephan's Square and sample some of their delicious gingerbread and pastries. I have a serious sweettooth and it was quite satiated by the wonderful variety of treats available at Cafe Simon. The cafe is a family-run establishment and has been so for generations and it is obvious that they put tremendous pride into their work. The presentation of their treats is surpassed only by the incredible taste. The assortment of chocolates, cookies and cakes are extensive and everything that I had the opportunity to try was excellent. Fortunately for me, I visited around Christmas and it is then that Cafe Simon's legendary Christmas gingerbread is available. I watched a gingerbread-making demonstration and was able to sample the 3 types of gingerbread available (each type is sweetened by either honey, molasses or white sugar). I found all 3 to be quite good, though the molasses gingerbread stole the show!

Cafe Simon is great any time of year, but especially so around Christmas. I highly recommend stopping in and picking whatever dessert catches your eye. The only problem that you may have is that everything will catch your eye and you'll have to narrow it down!
