“Beautiful room in the old town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

- we stayed here for two nights in June
- we chose the hotel because of the central location in the old town and the parking available in the back yard (for fee)
- the room was large and very beautiful.
- if you arrive be car, ask for driving directions in advance. They kindly sent them to us by e-mail and they were very helpful, because our navigator wanted to turn into forbidden, very narrow allies.
- the breakfast is in a cafeteria downstars, you may choose anything from the menu.
- friendly and and helpful staff
- For WIFI you need to buy a hot spot ticket ( 3 EUR/ 24 hours). The connection is not fast at every time and a SKYPE- call is disconected so many times that we found better to call by mobile phone.
- the room is clean.
- the towels are surprisingly small and thin for a 4 -star hotel and they are not replaced for fresh ones for the second night. The sheets are not changed, either.
- there is a small flat tv-screen in room, but picture was of really poor quality.
- NO safe-deposot box in room.
- there is no air- condition. In a hot summer night, you may need to keep the window open. We slept well, but if you are light sleeper, note that there is some noise from the street.
- the hotel is a historic setting and very different from big chain hotels. We recommend the exprerience of staying here.

This hotel is hard for the SATNAV to find - try using this address - Rote-Hahnen Gasse 1, Regensburg, it worked for us. There is no full time reception, but I called at the coffee shop and the receptionist was expecting me, and couldn't have been more helpful. We stayed in the Kaiser suite, which was superb! The suite had a well equipped kitchen with everything you would need including a Nespresso machine. There was lots of space. The appartment faced onto the square, but it wasn't noisy at nite. Breakfast was great in the coffee shop (which was much larger and grander that expected) next door. Parking was in the hotel's courtyard. The whole place had so much character, it just added to our holiday experience.
The room was spotless and was serviced every day.
Location is excellent- right in the middle of the old town within easy walking distance of all the attractions. Be sure to visit Walhalla by cruising on the Danube, a very pleasant way to pass an afternoon.
I definitely recommend this hotel.

My husband and I just returned from Regensburg and a WONDERFUL stay at the Hotel Goldenes Kreuz. Each room is exceptional! They are all set up different, some with a 4 poster bed and a large couch or like ours, a huge bed with many covers and pillows secluded by a set of dramatic curtains and a simple seating area. Our bathroom was quite large and incredibly clean and modern. Breakfast was just a few steps away in a cafe downstairs, with incredible service and DELICIOUS food!!!!
All was a GREAT value, but more importantly an absolute refreshing break from reality. I felt like we were truly on a holiday.

Room Tip: If you are looking for a truly dark room in which to sleep, choose rooms #1 or #4. Both have heavy d...

This is a difficult one to review. The building is lovely and our room was huge, very lovely and very comfortable. As well as the bed, we had a couch, a day bed and a desk,. It was a fabulous room. We had an enormous bathroom with seperate bath and shower and everything was beautifully presented and spotlessly clean. We had a nice view over the Haidplatz and the cute little Xmas market. We were able to park in the small courtyard, but it is very tight so not ideal if you plan to use your car a lot, but you don't really need a car in Regensburg. I believe there is paid parking nearby.
The reception was almost never attended during our stay, but there is a call button there and when we needed her, our hostess came running, quite literally, so that is not a problem. Breakfast is in the cafe next door and is good, you order from the cafe menu.
Now the negatives: the wifi is just a local hotspot and is slow and unreliable. We were there for Xmas day and with the cafe closed there was no breakfast available. They did bring us a tray of goodies and a kettle the night before. A bit disappointing but they did try, which was appreciated.

Having said all that it is very reasonably priced for the quality of the room which was lovely. It also feels very private and very secure, with a locked internal door to the corridor leading to the rooms. T As others have said, almost more like an apartment than a hotel room.
Overall, a good stay and a good choice for Regensburg. I would choose to stay here again.

This establishment is over 500 years old so there is your classic component. In bed, you look up at these ancient massive beams which are beautiful. Our room was huge and facing the beautiful square. Christina was charming, sweet and very helpful. Breakfast is served in the restaurant downstairs, and you can order what you want and seconds if you like. There is a lift, so no back breaking climb. You can drive there to drop off luggage and Christina will give you instructions on parking 5 mins away at a discounted rate.

It's hard to fault except that it was 35 degrees but we were given a well utilized fan. Some people may prefer a cooling system but with such high ceilings, it may not be worthwhile.

We'd definitely go back and stay here.

The hotel has so much history that they could fill many books. The rooms are are differently furnished with furniture ranging from the Baroque to Biedermeier. The beds are comfy, the ladies at the reception extremely friendly and the bathrooms very nice and super clean. The location couldn't be more central: right on Haidplatz. Breakfast is served in the cafe (you have to exit the hotel and go next door) and you can choose whichever breakfast you want or mix and match from the different set menus. If you come by car you can park inside the hotel.

Room Tip: get a room towards the back: quieter and in the summer cooler.

Ok. Let's do the negatives. Make sure your clearly state the quantity of nights you need. Forget the 'to' and the 'from' and maybe even the 'until'. These guys completely misunderstood our dates which resulted in us being transfered to another (more expensive and worse) hotel across the Haidplatz where we were told that " we will meet the difference" which would wind up being a 9 euro contribution to a situation that cost me in excess of 60 euro......But hey, that's where "lost in translation" can land you...Did I remonstrate ? Nope. I couldn't be bothered but it does show that caveat emptor is alive and well lurking behind every service-smile.

On the practical side: this is NOT a hotel. It's a range of apartments rather nicely and grandly decorated. We had two rooms and the bathrooms were just lovely. The ability to come and go may well suit those that prefer anonymity. If you like the idea of hotel staff, a bar, room service and a club sandwich at midnight, then this is not for you.....But generally , it's a nice relaxed tasteful place to be.....

Prices are reasonable given the competition (avoid the Arch hotel across the way like the plague....). The breakfast is essentially taken in a very mittel-klasse, relaxed cafe at ground level where ladies-that-lunch pop in. The selection of grub is ample, the staff very pleasant and, most essentially, it provides an atmosphere a million miles away from that stilted, morgue-like ambiance you get in many bourgeois or up-market hotels where couples seem incapable of exchanging conversation beyond "pass the milk"....afraid to talk above a whisper unless you're a Texan who's just sold a drilling company to Texaco......Yehaaaaaaa.......

In conclusion: clarify your nights booked, don't bank on permanent parking (the little courtyard can't possibly cope with everyone ) and don't expect 'full hotel services': then your 'House & Home' perusing amour will be more than comfortable.....and you'll be happy.....
