Description: The cosy atmosphere of the Gewlbes in Ratskeller Augsburg is steeped in tradition and extremely inviting, and allows you to get away from the reality of everyday life for a few hours. Whether you opt for something substantial like the 'Wirtshaus classic', or a lighter option such as grilled pike perch on a bed of leaf spinach with lobster sauce and herb potatoes, or something sweet such as caramelised sugared pancake with roasted almonds, raisins and apple mousse, there is something to suit everyone's taste. Children and vegetarians are also well catered for. For example, food cooked in vegetable oil is marked up especially on the menu. Furthermore, the lunchtime menu changes on a daily basis. he drinks menu also caters to your every desire, with anything from cold beer to alcohol-free cocktails, that taste twice as nice during happy hour - anything is possible. As a thrilling alternative, a number of Murder Mystery Dinners are organised throughout the year in Ratskeller in Augsburg.

Ratskeller has a great atmosphere/decoration with its high ceilings, it is a great cellar looking like an old style tavern with a modern touch. However, it has huge space and with all the crowd it really gets loud & noisy inside, pretty much like a beehive or a train station. Basically you have to shout all night long to hear each other.

The service is a bit slow but the waiters are quite friendly and cheerful. The food is not bad at all, I had the mixed Bavarian grill, it was OK. The cream sauce mushroom is fantastic.

I chose this restaurant reading the great reviews of it on Trip Advisor, but unfortunately I did not have the same experience. The atmosphere was great - it was in the cellar of the Town Hall, the old brick walls, old tables and good music definitely made for an awesome atmosphere.

The food, however, was a hit and miss. Our party of 5 ordered a schnitzel, the Ratskeller special (Ratskellerpfanne), a baked potato with turkey, and a sausage dish.

The schnitzel and sausage dishes were tasty. The schnitzel was tasty and juicy. The drinks and desserts were tasty.

However the Ratskeller special and the turkey that came with the baked potato was inedible! The Ratskeller special's description in the menu was 'medallions of tender pork and beef'. The pork and beef were very dry and tough and hard. Absolutely not tender. In fact the pork was exactly like how I imagine thick cardboard would taste and feel. I would not even serve such pork to my family at home - I do not understand how a restaurant can serve this to their customers. The turkey pieces that came with the baked potato were rock hard, and I am not even exaggerating.

So, if you go, do NOT order anything that has meat in it, except for schnitzel & sausages.

We wanted to have a taste of German food in a historical setting and this more than met our needs. Located in the cellar of the old city hall building we were welcomed by friendly and courteous staff who guided us through various menu choices of German cuisine. What a great evening at a popular spot and more that reasonable prices - if you are in Augsburg visit the Ratskeller

A restaurant located at the basement of the city hall??? Yes, this is the place!
However, the location is just adding to the unique atmosphere of the place. The food is typical and is very good. I would advise to try the local choices. I tried the beef soup (great!) and the white sausage that is served with boiled water and spices - I loved it.

My family also loved their choices with a good steak and the shrimps in tomato sauce. Again, I recommend to try the typical traditional choices. They are really good.

The service is very attentive, friendly and most of the staff speak good English. The place is very busy. You can either make reservation in advance or hope that they have vacancy on the high bar tables. We sit on one of them as this had been the only vacancy. It is not super-comfortable, but did not harm the excellent experience.
