I honestly didn't expect the hotel to be that good and in this price ranges. ..totally satisfied :)
Private parking and a very good renovated Gasthof witb free wifi.
Totally recommend it for a family retreat and jyst 2 min walk to the old city.

Traveling by car, hotel parking was a big concern for me. The Rappen has good parking. Located within sight of a town gate/tower, it has a very good location and is easy to find. The walk to the market square was an easy one. We stayed 3 nights and thought it a good value. We failed to make reservations at the restaurant and therefore did not eat there at night so we cannot rate it. The breakfast buffet was good, and it was busy. Our room was fine and suited our needs well. It had a balcony and was up to date, clean, restfull, etc. We initially went to the Gasthaus desk to check in and were re-directed one door down to the actual Hotel which has a very modern lobby. We were told they really operate pretty much independently of each other. The folks at the hotel desk were good and we were handled well. There was a vending machine in the corridor on our floor that dispensed beer. As Americans we found that quite unique and handy at 2€ a pop. All in all we chose the right place for us and enjoyed our stay. Rothenburg is just the one place in Germany you cannot bypass.

When travelling sometimes we have to accept that not every town will have a brand spanking new hotel. I'm not sure what other options are around in Rothenberg. However that said the place was clean, the restaurant down the road was not too bad and there was a very pleasant beer garden associated. The hotel is right at the gateway to the old town so that was a plus. It was the only place in Europe where we had any difficulty having our English understood.

Room Tip: Not many upgrade options although our floor did have balconies

Stayed only one night in this hotel.
This is a very average hotel, don't expect luxury but is correct, comfortable and clean.
Located next of one of the gates into the old town, makes it a very convenient location since is very easy to find and get to in the car.
The rooms are big, clean but basic. Wifi and parking are free. Buffet breakfast was included and was great with a lot of choices.
The staff was nice and helpful.

We would recommend this place.

We stayed here for two nights in September. It wasn't our first choice for our stay in Rothenburg but, even so, our stay did not meet our lowered expectations.

Positives: Just a short walk to the nearest city gate.

Negatives:
1. The heat in our room did not appear to work. We told the hotel staff and they promised to look into it. We did not notice any improvement.

2. Hotel staff were not very friendly.

3. We were awoken very early both mornings by hotel staff working in a room next door. We got a peek of this room and it appeared to be an unfinished room full of cleaning supplies. The racket the staff were making in this room at very early hours was enormous.

4. Rooms were cold and uncomfortable and honestly smelled. Very out-dated.

This is just really a hotel and nothing spectacular about it.
Pros: parking offstreet is available, it is just outside the city gate so easy for walking, free wifi, dinner meal was quite tasty but hotel prices.
Cons: It is just a hotel with rooms that are basic and the bathroom could only fit one person at a time, staff were not friendly and reception at first claimed we had no booking and were about to move onto another customer when I insisted they look again; breakfast is advertised as being until 10 am but we turned up the first day at 9 and there was virtually nothing left and staff were cleaning up. The next morning we headed down to breakfast early only to be told we couldnt sit in the breakfast main room as it was reserved for the cycling tour. We were also housed in the nextdoor older hotel as this is where the standard rooms are.
Recommend: park your car in the carpark outside the wall and go for a walk around the town stopping at a few of the hotels and seeing what is for offer. Many of these hotels looked really good and had their own parking as well. I am sure you would get a better rate and quality elsewhere. Do the Nightwatchmans Tour - absolutely fantastic

Room Tip: Check which section of the complex your room is in when booking as the newer hotel is much nicer.

I traveled with a group and stayed at this hotel September 2013. I have stayed at this hotel one other time (last year) in the first building (there are 3). The first building has quaint ambience with older european accents. This year, my room was in the back building. It was nice, clean and had an elevator. My room was standard size with a double bed. The room was quiet and the bed was comfortable....but, I didn't get that "I'm traveling in Germany" feel. The location of the hotel is very good as it is right outside the wall. Breakfast was just OK but I may have been spoiled as I had experienced a really good breakfast buffet at the hotel in the previous days. Of note, the front desk did not explain that you need to wave your room card in front of a sensor (non discript and not marked) that is located on the side of the door on the building. This took me a few minutes standing with my luggage to figure out. Also, it would have been nice to have a reminder that you need to put your room card into a slot by the door to have electricity. All in all, I would stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in building closest to the wall, if possible
