The Mittermeier Hotel proved to be a sound choice for our Easter weekend in Rothenburg. It's very easy to find, located on a corner just outside one of the main gates on the city wall. There is parking out the front and also a few spaces round the back (a bit of care required here is you have a large car).
There was nobody on reception, but a quick ring on the bell brought a friendly and helpful member of staff to check us in. We'd booked what was cryptically described as a "smart" room, for what seemed on the face of it to be a very attractive rate. This turned out to be a very small room with a double bed squeezed up against the side wall. This would have been fine for a single person, or perhaps a couple for overnight, but was really two small to spend three nights in. Reception was able to upgrade us to an available Superior room for 30 euros per night, which seemed reasonable. To be honest, this made the package less competitive than we'd originally thought but it still represented good value for money.
Our new room was much larger and had a king sized bed and large bathroom, as well as patio doors that opened out onto a patio area (but too cold in April to make much use of this). No fridge or aircon - in fact the heating was underfloor heating. I guess it could become quite hot in summer in that room, but certainly not a problem in the early Spring.
We decided not to have dinner in the hotel's own restaurant - which I gather has won several awards. The menu seemed expensive and perhaps a bit over-fussy - and we were spoiled for choice by the range of nice places to eat in in the town, just a few minutes walk away. We did really like the hotel breakfasts however. There was a selection of bread, ham, cheese etc but also egg-based dishes which were cooked to order (omelettes, scrambled egg etc) - all were excellent quality, as was the made to order coffee (cappuccino and lattes as well as the usual pot of filter coffee). We even got chocolate Easter bunnies on the table on Easter Sunday! Very friendly serving staff as well who we were able to practice our rather rusty German language skills on.
