We absolutely loved this hotel and city. There is something wonderful about sleeping in a room that someone slept in 600 years earlier! Plus, it was modernized (but not too much) and very clean. If you are in Germany, you must visit Rothenburg and walk the walls around the city. We drove to Hotel Spitweg and were able to park in their courtyard, which is very rare in this town. Walter, the owner, gave us great restaurant suggestions and wonderful service at breakfast. What we thought would be a buffet was practically a made to order feast. Only thing, be aware most of the rooms don't have showers, but hand-held sprayers in a tub. Other than that, highly recommend this place!! Walter is charming.

Room Tip: Ask for a shower.

Hotel Spitzweg was recommended to us by a family member, and it was pleasing to see that the word-of-mouth advice was all true. Once we found the hotel (no thanks to the usually reliable sat nav) we were greeted by the friendly owner who showed us on the map where to spend our day.

The hotel had an old, romantic feel and we were very pleased with our stay. The breakfast was great and filled us up for the day.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who can climb a set of stairs (there is no lift). Also, the highlight of our stay was the Night Watchmen’s Tour, a must do.

The scaffolding makes it a little difficult to find the hotel, but it won't interfere with your stay. Inside, the building is a museum, beautifully decorated. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The owner is charming. Breakfast is excellent.
There is no internet, although you can use the computer at the tourist info office on the main square a few blocks from the hotel.

When we arrived at our long awaited stay in Rothenburg, we found the Spitzweg covered with scaffolding on all sides - apparently getting ready for repairs. While I understand the necessity of such things, they could have made us aware of this and perhaps offered us a discounted rate for the inconvenience. But no...no one was there when we arrived. We had to call to a employee who came from a nearby establishment to let us in and show us our room. The room furnishings were very outdated (and not in a good way) and the bed was so lumpy, I slumped into the dibbet and was unable to cuddle with my husband. It was clean, but in serious need of updating. The breakfast was ok and the owners (when they showed up in the morning) were nice (especially the wife) but when we told the man that we were leaving, he charged me a 50% fee for early cancellation, making light of the scaffolding and what it meant to our costly vacation experience. I would not go here again! There are many places to choose from in this busy town and many more that are kept up better on the inside. Skip this place.

This is a great find, and highly recommended. It even has a free car park behind the hotel. The rooms are small, and some doors are low, but after all - these buildings are hundreds of years old! And there are no elevators. For these minor inconveneinces, you get a warm welcome, a helpful set of suggestions as to what to do and where to go, a clean room, and a great German breakfast. What's not to like? This hotel is inside the walls of Rothenberg, about a block from the famoust clock next to the Rathaus, and within easy walking distance of everything.

We'd stay there again in a heartbeat!
