“Medieval Inn in a Medieval Town”
Reviewed 4 December 2013

Like the town of Rothenburg itselt, the Altfrankische Weinstube is a picturesque Medieval landmark. The building is a 700 years old half-timbered structure with a small bistro type restaurant and a very small hotel. The rooms are rather small with huge wooden beams to bang your head on, but equipped with modern bathrooms. The entire hotel and bistro are furnished with antiques. This is quaint beyond description. Service was OK but not exceptional. The morning breakfast buffet was average but nice. Prices were reasonable.

This is more what we would call an inn than a hotel as it only has a handful of rooms but it looks exactly as you would perhaps want it to look in this fairy tale like town with its ivy covered walls and rustic furniture. It is full of curios the minute you walk through the door in every nook and cranny all of which creates a charming atmosphere. We drove here and the hosts saved a parking space for us as they are limited within the city walls. We booked for dinner as advised which was just as well because it was full at dinner time and we had a really lovely recommended local dish and wine all of which were good value. My partner cried when she saw our room because she thought it was so pretty and romantic! After walking round the old town the next morning we did the walk around the top of the city walls which I can highly recommend as you get some great perspectives. Would not want to stay anywhere else if we came here again which is very likely!

If you are visiting Rothenburg to experience a medieval city, the uber-charming Altfrankische is the perfect place to stay or at least to wine 'n' dine. It's about as old as Rothenburg itself -- 600 years old -- and combines the feel of all that history with modern comforts. It is clean, comfortable and snug, filled with enough tschotskes, stuffed birds and animals, paintings and photos to satisfy the most outlandish fantasy about a German inn. Mario gave us the "honeymoon suite," which, considering we have grandchildren in college, was flattering if overly ambitious. He, his family and his staff are pleasant but businesslike, which was just fine with us but might account for some of the negative comments in other reviews.

The very nice and spacious room was quiet with a comfortable bed and came with free WiFi and a quite good breakfast. And if you can't find free parking on your own, leave it up to Mario. He actually parked us about ten feet from the front door.

One other thing I have to mention is the dinner. The menu was the standard German fare but done so well, with subtle tweaks, that it turned out to be among the best we had in all of Germany. It was so good that my usually very reserved wife, an aficionado of French cuisine, did something I have never seen her do before: she went into the kitchen and heaped the woman chef with praise. Take that, Guide Michelin.

If we ever again find ourselves anywhere near Rothenburg, this is where we'll be staying.

This is a very small family hotel (perhaps only 6 rooms) located at the center (and silent) charming Rothenburg, inside the walls, minutes of pleasant walking form the town center. You can arrive with your car (recommended!) - finding a parking place is a challenge - but the very friendly owners certainly will help you as the did for us.
Beautiful atmosphere, nice rooms, top clean.
They run an excellent dinner restaurnat downstairs. Not to be missed.
Run for it if there are still room left.
For sure we shall come again once we are again in the area.

And - do not miss:
(1) the evening English guided night tour - leaving from the main square.
(2) Hike down the vineyards to the double equaduct bridge, cross the Tauber river, and go up the nice trail to the summit. beautiful walk, and the views...

This hotel was wonderful. From the outside, it looked like a picture from a postcard. Inside, it was so quaint with antiques, old wooden tables, a piano, wine bottles, and history. Mario, his wife, and daughter were wonderful. Breakfast was included and was very good. The room was very spacious & clean. The bed & pillows were very comfortable. The bathroom was very large & modern with amenities such as shampoo, lotions, bath crystals, heated towel rack, & hairdryer.
The most intriguing part of the visit was that the "English speaking club" is held there on Wednesday nights - and we happened to be there that night. It was wonderful! We met "Herman the German", Wolfgang, and a host of others eager to share their stories. It was definitely a highlight of our trip.
The location of the hotel was central to everything, including the town square. Be sure and go to the night watchman's tour - it's fantastic!

Room Tip: We were on the 2nd floor and it was a spacious and comfortable room. It was large enough for a fam...

After our initial meeting with the owner, who was very gruff and demanded to see our reservation sheet, even though I knew he had our name and I had emailed the night before to confirm our reservation, we finally got to our room. We booked a suite and it was 2 large rooms plus a huge bathroom. Initially we were delighted. We were very tired and went to bed at 10:00 on a Saturday night - our mistake. Our room had 4 windows (one of which wouldn't shut properly) over the front and the street. Noise from the smokers and the people on the street was nearly intolerable and we just couldn't sleep until after 1:30 am. So that dampened our thoughts about the place. I would recommend this place, but ask for a room that doesn't face the street. The breakfast was typical.

My husband and I were directed to this restaurant by a different hotel in which we were staying for our anniversary dinner. It did not disappoint us. The small quaint tavern was set with low lighting, candles on the tables, and the entrance had vintage pianos and décor. We enjoyed the traditional German fare. They were notable for their Pork roast and gravy which was delicious and my husband had the array of local German sausages. We had a lovely German wine with dinner and of course started out with some local German beer in steins. The only thing not on the menu was Sauerbraten which we knew going into the venture. We had a lovely experience and would definitely go back.
