“Ate there twice”
Reviewed 30 June 2014 via mobile

Yes we succumbed to the recommendations of the night watchman:). Huge wine and beer list, with minimal menu space dedicated to food. What food they do offer was very good albeit slightly pricy. It is a small restaurant so things are pretty tight in there. Probably not the place to go if you are claustrophobic. The only con I had was that both nights that we ate there they played either the " our credit card machine isn't working" game or the " ill drop off the check but never come back so you have to leave cash if you want to leave" game! Would be frustrating if you didn't happen to have cash on you. Still.....worth checking out!

“For evenings in Rothenburg, go To Hell!”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Rothenburg closes early for the most part, so finding a place that stays open late and that has great atmosphere in this lovely old town is worth its weight. Zur Holl fit the bill in spades. We didn't eat, we just went in for a night cap (or two...) and had a great time. As I mentioned, the atmosphere is a fun one (not what I'd call a quiet, family place, but again, we were there in the evening). The decor and ambiance seems to be interesting enough to keep the tourists coming in the door, and all else about it, including the friendly staff, must rate well as we recognized several locals stopping in when we were there (including the Night Watchman, stopping in between his nightly rounds/tours).
We seem to do things in shifts - our first trip to Rothenburg - "We'll have to stop in there." Our second trip to Rothenburg - "Let's go have a drink there." Maybe on our third trip, we'll get around to having a meal, but the menu did look intriguing.
If you're staying on or near the Herrngasse, take the alley/shortcut alongside the Eisenhut and you'll come right up alongside Zur Holl (quite near the back of the Kriminal Museum). Also, check out the bellows table in the oldest room, down below - very awesome.

“Lost and Found”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

We had the cave room shown in some of the photos by customers - the atmosphere was great. A nice quiet corner for 4 of us to have a lovely chat (but it holds a maximum of around 8 people).

We had 3 mains -

1. Pork Ribs
- Was perfect. Tasted like american stuff but none the less tasted good. Recommended.

2. Mixed platter of sausages, pork and beef (daily selections)
- Another lovely dish.

3. White asparagus with schnitzel
- The schnitzel rather disappointed us since the fried batter coating was slightly soggy...but the white aspargus with its sauce was lovely.

We had beer and wine in additional to the three.

***
What I was truly impressed is that we left some souvenirs at the place after our lovely dinner, and we had to catch a train 10am the next morning.
We came upon the door 9am the next day, with no one inside the restaurant (since it opens at 5pm). However, upon further questions at nearby shops, we found that it was co-owned by the same owner of another hotel. We, therefore, went to that very hotel to ask if we could get the souvenirs back on time. I was genuinely impressed by their level of patience, and their efficiency in asking a member of staff to accompany us to the restaurant and gave us back our souvenirs almost right away. This I must commend on their service and patience on us.

Truly warm and lovely restaurant!
Recommended to all!

“Medieval place with great food!!”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

This is just a remarkable experience that is trully uforgettable. I've read the reviews here and followed the suggestions. We went there in mid June, in a warm and sunny evening. The street is quiet and charming, and the restaurant has a special cave with a table were 6 people can sit. We got it and ordered the "specials", which were not in the regular menu but were recommended by the owner/chief waiter. I had a delicious crunchy soft pork meat with sausages and melted potatoes which I will never forget. This was a real must, one of the best meals in the region.
